The Tactical Solutions Strategic Business Unit delivers mission system solutions, from specialized antennas to electro-optical technologies, to the warfighter. Our systems enhance the performance of various military platforms, from aircraft and land vehicles to ships and satellites, and give warfighters the advantage they need to take action, identify targets and defend against evolving threats.


Director of Imaging & Surveillance (IAS) – Tactical Solutions


Lead the IAS Mission Area within Tactical Solutions in new business development, customer engagements, functional management, program execution, and technical product development.


What You’ll Do:


  • Lead the IAS Mission Area with responsibility for overall performance:
    • Budget planning
    • Personnel management
    • Internal investments (IRAD)
    • New business capture
    • Program execution:
      • Technical excellence
      • Quality, delivery, sales, and profit
  • Direct development of solutions in response to customer needs:
    • Direct IRAD investments and manage technology innovation
    • Direct capture plans and strategies
    • Direct pursuit and proposal activities
    • Manage customer relationships
  • Provide leadership and functional management of principal staff to support the breadth of managed responsibilities within the Mission Area by exhibiting behaviors aligned with the tenants of Ball’s Inspire, Connect and Achieve (ICA) leadership model. The behaviors would include providing a unifying vision, understanding the diverse needs of others to meet business challenges, and acting with humility and a collaborative spirit.
  • Coordinate with other Mission Areas and SBU’s for cross-domain captures.
  • Ensure that all business is conducted with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, statutes, regulations, and company policies.
  • The Mission Area success is often contingent on the support from the Strategic Capabilities Units (SCUs). Therefore, the Mission Area Director shall:
    • Work with the SCUs to define and address the strategic needs of the Mission Area.
    • Define expectations and hold the SCUs accountable to their portion of new business capture and program execution.
    • Contribute to TS strategic and operational planning.
    • Represent TS with customers and at industry and government conferences.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units, and the Company. Interact appropriately with others to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You’ll Need:


  • BS/BA in related field plus 15 years or more related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, or related field preferred.
  • 15 years of experience in aerospace or related industry preferred.
  • MS or higher degree preferred.
  • A current, active Secret security clearance is required.
  • Demonstrated track record of success at all levels
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in technical leadership for defense systems.
  • Experience in new business capture activities.
  • Experience in leading design teams.
  • Excellent relationships within the DoD customer community.
  • Must be an experienced presenter to senior decision makers.
  • Excellent communication and proposal writing skills.
  • Excellent programmatic background within government or industry desirable.
  • Experience operating within classified program environments. Multiple special resiliency-specific clearances strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical competence in any of the following is required:
    • Optics
    • Focal plane arrays and focal plane subsystems
    • APT (acquisition, pointing & tracking) techniques/systems
    • Electro-optical remote sensing payload systems operating from visible to LWIR
    • Ground systems and technologies


Flexible On-Site Work Environment:
This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three or more days per work week. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Compensation & Benefits:


  • HIRING SALARY RANGE:
    $171,000 - $235,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
  • Subject to business performance and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan.
  • Subject to business and individual performance, and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in a long-term incentive compensation plan.
