Ballard’s Product Engineering Department has an opening for a Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer/ Applied Scientist* to join the Mechanical Engineering team developing air compressors for the next generation of Ballard’s fuel cell systems. The successful candidate will work within a structured environment to apply their strong technical skills to the selection and validation of fuel cell system components and will support testing in the lab and in the field.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and document universal component design requirements (CDR) for fuel cell air compressor.
- Investigate fuel cell system air compressor component options, key attributes and differences between the options. Recommend components to program teams based on requirements.
- Identify and interact with 3rd party suppliers of fuel cell air compressors to develop key technical and commercial information.
- Support the characterization and performance validation testing of fuel cell air compressors. Capture test objectives in written test requests provided to testing team. Interpret test results and draw conclusions. Review test reports to ensure key information is documented.
- Document and communicate technical and commercial plans and progress regarding components through internal reports and presentations.
- Participate in and contribute to informal and formal design reviews.
- Contribute to failure analysis investigations on failed mechanical systems and components.
- Contribute to the development of cost-effective designs that meet functionality, durability and robustness requirements.
- Participate in growing the functional competency of the Mechanical Engineering team.
Requirements:
- Degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, engineering physics, or a related field with 3 years of directly related experience.
- Experience in turbomachinery and/or electric motors
- Understanding of design validation testing & processes.
- Proven ability to work to time schedules and commitments for deliverables; determine scope of work and plan effectively to meet those commitments.
- Ability to work with limited oversight making sound decisions with focus on the goal.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Good knowledge of structural design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, shock and vibration, GD&T, small-scale rotational equipment, fabrication processes, assembly processes, and selection of general mechanical components.
Preferred:
- Exposure to standard engineering practices such as DFMEA, Product Certification, Codes and Standards, Requirements Management (JAMA), and Safety & Reliability Analysis.
- Experience with dealing with outside vendors and fabrication shops, including purchasing processes.
- Practical experience with process engineering, industrial and/or product development settings and equipment.
- Fundamental knowledge in mechanical and aerodynamic design of turbochargers
- Previous background with fuel cell systems and components.
- Familiarity with supplier qualification and PPAP process.
The typical hiring range for this position is CAD93,840 -CAD127,625 per annum. In determining total compensation, Ballard considers many factors, including the successful Candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, position location, and internal equity.
