Starter - Race

MAJOR FOCUS:

• 
  Start each live harness race in accordance with the rules of the Delaware Harness Racing Commission

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• 
  Provide fair and safe race starts to all horsemen competing at Dover Downs
• Provide consistent starts of all races with all horses on the gate in order to best serve the public that wagers on Dover Downs races
• Operate starting gate in a consistent and safe manner for each live harness race at Dover Downs
• Wash starting car as necessary
• Fuel starting car as necessary
• Store starting car in proper place at conclusion of each racing day
• Take direction from DHRC judges when appropriate
• Provide exceptional customer service
• Work safely, following all established safety rules and regulations
• Communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and guests
• Follow all relevant policies and procedures

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

• 
  Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION:

• 
  High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience required
• Current Delaware driver’s license required
• Licensed by the Delaware Harness Racing Commission (DHRC)
• Prior experience operating a starting car for harness racing in a racing environment or three years experience as a groom and/or trainer of standard bred race horses.
• Excellent working knowledge of the DHRC rulebook
• Must be able to step up into (enter/exit) vehicle
• Must possess good communication skills
• Must be able to report to work on time as scheduled
• Must be able to work weekends, holidays and nights as needed
