Salary Grade: 8 (organization will provide salary schedule)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist leak, dump truck, field, valve and construction crews in installing, repairing and maintaining the water mains in the distribution system. Responsible for the maintenance of rights-a-way, potable and raw water mains.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Assist in locating and installing water mains, valves, fire hydrants, service, loops, etc., including repairing leaks within the distribution system.

  • Perform manual excavations and tamping of backfill after excavations using a jackhammer or clay spade.

  • Assist in maneuvering heavy objects such as pipe, fittings, and valves; assist in measuring and cutting pipe for leak repairs; apply coating materials to pipelines; pour and drive lead in pipe joints.

  • Replace paving and concrete, repair sleeves and split sleeves.

  • Operate equipment related to appurtenances and construction for the repair of water mains and its appurtenances. Operate mowing equipment such as riding mowers, string trimmers and push mowers to maintain transmission water mains and rights-of-way.

  • Install clamps on breaks, replace service lines and shut off valves for repairs.

  • Install service taps with tapping machines for fire hydrants, domestic and fire services.

  • Maintain traffic control in the work area using flags to ensure a safe working environment.

  • Replace and install meter boxes as needed.

  • Work an on-call rotating schedule outside the regular schedule on a rotating basis.

  • Perform all work safely in accordance with established safety policies and procedures. Comply with all safety and health standards and guidelines issued by management.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience: Six (6) months of manual labor experience required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license required

  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) class B preferred

  • ADEM Grade I Certification preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or sit for extended periods

  • Reaching by excreting hand(s) or arms(s) in any direction

  • Finger dexterity is required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard

  • Communication skills using the spoken word

  • Ability to see within normal parameters

  • Ability to hear within normal parameters

  • Ability to move about

  • Ability to lift 100 pounds

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Loud noise; work indoors and outdoors, exposed to extreme hot/cold/wet weather conditions

  • Work in proximity to operating machinery, traffic, and rural/wooded areas to locate valves

  • Confined spaces
