CLASS TITLE : Health Assistant - (0.8 FTE Middlesex Elementary, 0.2 FTE Carney Elementary)
REPORTS TO: Supervisor, Health Services
GRADE: 31-35 (Depending on Education) 10 months
SALARY: $20.50 to $33.82/ hour depending on experience, per ESPBC (Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County) pay scale under Paraeducator , effective July 1, 2023.
DEFINITION : Under direct guidance of the school health nurse or nurse practitioner, performs delegated nursing functions in the care of students visiting the health suite or wellness center. Performs clerical duties such as filing. Covers the health suite in the absence of the school nurse. Performs other duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :
Provides first aid, as directed by the school nurse.
Assists in managing health suite visits by securing the student's record(s), determining, and recording the reason for the visit, obtaining and recording vital signs, and implementing interventions, as directed by the school nurse.
Assists the school health nurse in health screening programs and documents results in student health records.
Prepares correspondence, records, and reports as required by the school health nurse. Answers telephone calls related to health services programs. Maintains current cumulative health records on students. Files documents in the student's health record.
Contacts required persons to facilitate the transportation of ill or injured students.
Distributes and restock supplies as delegated by the school nurse. Order and maintain clinical and offices supply and equipment for wellness centers.
Administers medication delegated by the school health nurse in compliance with the Baltimore County Public School's procedures and Board of Nursing regulations.
Provides coverage for schools without a nurse, as directed by the Office of Health Services.
Collects and verifies insurance information for students making wellness center visits.
Assists with temperature monitoring to meet CLIA requirements.
Performs selected duties, as directed by the wellness center clinician, including; preparing patients for examination, taking vital signs, preparing exam room, serving as chaperone, and performing vision screening.
Retrieves and returns vaccines and specimens to the Baltimore County Department of Health local health center.
Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Education, Training and Experience :
Possession of a high school diploma or appropriate equivalent.
Experience in nursing or health services preferred.
Experience with communicating effectively with bilingual populations preferred.
Licenses and Certificates :
Eligibility for, or possession of, certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Medication Technician (CMT) in compliance with the Board of Nursing regulations and the Baltimore County Public Schools procedures required. Current Red Cross standard first aid certification required. Current CPR certification required.
Certifications must be obtained within 90-day probationary period and maintained throughout employment.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The work of this class is generally sedentary but requires the physical strength to occasionally assist in lifting students. Requires physical agility and strength to perform in emergency situations, such as CPR or Heimlich maneuver.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
Employees in this class may be required to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends based on the work schedules of students.
