The mechanical assembler performs diversified operations to assemble, install, rebuild or repair intricate, large and expensive precision machines. Assembly and erection procedures are standard practices implemented in accordance with customer specifications and sometimes complicated assembly drawings. Incumbent performs skilled fitting of parts, sub-assemblies and units, and alignment, adjustment and required secondary machining and fabrication. Working with engineers, must be capable of complex problem solving and corrective actions. Incumbent is occasionally called upon to instruct and oversee the work of Mechanical Assemblers with lower classification. Finally, utilizing precision measuring instruments and gauging devices, incumbent inspects and tests completed components, and participates in the testing and final inspection of completed machines.

Incumbent spends a significant part of the workday standing, and performs physical activities that require considerable use of his arms and legs, and moving his entire body, such as climbing, lifting, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Position requires very good near vision for seeing details at close range, as well as good arm-hand steadiness, finger and manual dexterity. Must also possess physical flexibility and coordination.
Incumbent sometimes works alone, but most often works in a team environment where he might be called upon to be the team leader. Subject to direction and supervision, the incumbent works in a job shop environment where duties may vary significantly from day to day, thereby requiring a degree of flexibility, initiative, and ability to prioritize. Incumbent may be required to interface with others in problem solving situations, and with other workers as part of their training. May also have significant interface with customer’s personnel while performing installation, repair or rebuilding of machines at the customers location.
