Summary

The mechanical assembler performs diversified operations to assemble, install, rebuild or repair intricate, large and expensive precision machines. Assembly and erection procedures are standard practices implemented in accordance with customer specifications and sometimes complicated assembly drawings. Incumbent performs skilled fitting of parts, sub-assemblies and units, and alignment, adjustment and required secondary machining and fabrication. Working with engineers, must be capable of complex problem solving and corrective actions. Incumbent is occasionally called upon to instruct and oversee the work of Mechanical Assemblers with lower classification. Finally, utilizing precision measuring instruments and gauging devices, incumbent inspects and tests completed components, and participates in the testing and final inspection of completed machines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

The Mechanical Assembler is responsible for the assembly of parts, weldments, & subassemblies per engineering specifications in an accurate and timely manner. Duties performed include:

  • Read and interpret drawing\print specifications to determine procedures and assembly sequence.
  • Layout machines – Assemble and fit parts, subassemblies and mechanisms together. Fabricate extra bracketry as required.
  • Troubleshoot basic assembly problems and make adjustments to tooling in support of machinery debug.
  • Operate a fork truck and overhead cranes as needed to support the machinery build process.
  • Operate various hand tools, power hand tools, and machine tools to make adjustments to tooling or the parts.
  • Use a variety of precision measuring devices to set up and adjust parts and verify conformance of work to specifications.
  • Create and\or complete all necessary documentation and paperwork as required (some documentation is done on computers).
  • Travel (some travel maybe international & require overnight stays) for installs or service calls – During peak demand can be up to 25% of the time but the average is 10%

Education, Experience and Qualifications

The following are several key requirements:

  • High school education and 3 to 5 years related work experience. Associate degree in an associated field is beneficial but not required.
  • Ability to exercise logic to identify problems, alternative solutions, conclusions and approach to problems.
  • Good math and computer skills, good verbal and communicative skills, ability to interact with others.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude, and understand mechanical assembly principles and practices.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as blueprints, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Familiarity with interpretation of GD&T beneficial but not required.
  • Must be familiar with & safely operate portable power tool and machine tools such as drill press, band saw, cut-off saw and grinder.
  • Ability to write standard documentation such as a trip report, expense report, etc. & comfortable with documenting on a computer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) with other employees of the organization and customers in a quick and accurate manor.
  • Previous experience and training with PLC logic, programming, robotics, or welding (MIG or resistance) are beneficial but not required.
  • Basic knowledge of carpentry, pneumatics, and hydraulics is beneficial but not required.

Work Environment

Incumbent spends a significant part of the workday standing, and performs physical activities that require considerable use of his arms and legs, and moving his entire body, such as climbing, lifting, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Position requires very good near vision for seeing details at close range, as well as good arm-hand steadiness, finger and manual dexterity. Must also possess physical flexibility and coordination.

Incumbent sometimes works alone, but most often works in a team environment where he might be called upon to be the team leader. Subject to direction and supervision, the incumbent works in a job shop environment where duties may vary significantly from day to day, thereby requiring a degree of flexibility, initiative, and ability to prioritize. Incumbent may be required to interface with others in problem solving situations, and with other workers as part of their training. May also have significant interface with customer’s personnel while performing installation, repair or rebuilding of machines at the customers location.
