Duties:
Reviewing electronic medical record and operative reports to identify all services and procedures performed by the physician during surgical cases.
Is knowledgeable of and able to apply AMA guidelines to ensure the correct coding of surgical procedures.
Researches and analyzes data needs for reimbursement.
Analyzes medical records and identifies documentation deficiencies.
Serves as resource and subject matter expert to other coding staff.
Reviews and verifies documentation supports diagnoses, procedures, and treatment results.
Identifies diagnostic and procedural information.
Audits clinical documentation and coded data to validate documentation supports services rendered for reimbursement and reporting purposes.
Assigns codes for reimbursements, research and compliance with regulatory requirements utilizing guidelines.
Follows coding conventions. Serves as coding consultant to care providers.
Identifies discrepancies, potential quality of care, and billing issues.
Researches, analyzes, recommends, and facilitates plan of action to correct discrepancies and prevent future coding errors.
Identifies reportable elements, complications, and other procedures.
Serves as resource and subject matter expert to other coding staff.
Assists lead or supervisor in orienting, training, and mentoring staff.
Provides ongoing training to staff as needed.
Handles special projects as requested.
Contact physicians and other health care professionals with questions about treatments or diagnostic tests given to patients with regard to coding procedures.
Job Requirements:
Proven work experience as an Orthopedic Surgery Coder or similar role
Experience in researching and applying coding rules and regulations.
Knowledge of medical terminology including orthopedic surgical procedures and coding guidelines
Extensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
Knowledge of personal computer applications and Electronic Medical Record
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
Must be able to communicate and interact with physicians and staff effectively.
Outstanding organizational and decision-making skills.
Ability to work well in a team environment. Being able to triage priorities and multi-task.
Maintaining patient confidentiality as per the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Preferred Qualifications:
ICD-10: 2 years (Required)
Medical Billing: 2 years (Preferred)
Orthopedic Surgery Coding: 2 years (Required)
Spine Coding In and Out Patient (Preferred)
Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder (Preferred)
Certified Professional Coder (Required)
High school or equivalent (Preferred)
