What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at BARC Houston?
BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions is seeking a veterinary assistant to provide care and welfare of shelter animals and aid the public through education and service. Our goal is to provide animal control and care services that minimize fear, pain, stress, and suffering to animals in and out of the shelter. We work to ensure safe and healthy human-animal interactions. We are a fast paced animal shelter serving approximately 27,000 animals yearly. BARC is the only city shelter in Houston required by law to accept every animal that comes through our doors regardless of breed, temperament, health conditions, and circumstance (from owner surrender, stray pickup, rescued, or confiscated animals). Despite our open acceptance, we maintain a live release rate above 90% which classifies us as a "no kill" shelter. This is achieved through our best-in-class team that stewards our mission of professionalism, responsibility, compassion, commitment, integrity, and accountability.
This position includes providing medical care to animals; assisting veterinarians in the health care of animals and the analysis of animal disease; performing treatment as prescribed by a veterinarian; monitoring animal well-being; providing services to animals within our shelter and of the public; ensuring all animals within the facility are treated in align with a "Fear Free" shelter; maintaining accurate computerized records; pursuing professional growth to maintain an innovative and best practice; community and public service and education; and other related work responsibilities.
