Job Overview: The Laboratory Assistant performs all clerical and pre-analytical specimen preparation and processing duties associated with the proper functioning of the laboratory including specimen handling and processing, assisting with Bone Marrow send out tests, filing paperwork and slides, assisting with inventory management, and telephone responsibilities,
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required. Post high school training is necessary. It should be similar in length and scope to Medical Assistant certification.

Essential Functions:
- Specimen processing is performed in a quality and timely manner and distributed to appropriate sections. In-house specimens are checked to ensure they are adequate in amount, collected in the correct container and are properly labeled. Specimens which are transported to other departments or laboratories are processed timely and appropriately. Stat specimens are expedited. Specimens are properly processed and stored for later testing as needed.
- Assists in gathering and documenting quality control data (i.e. - temperature logs, maintenance logs, bench cleaning, etc). Assists with inspection readiness as requested by the supervisor.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records and notifies supervisor of any changes or issues noted. Maintains supply inventory and reorders as necessary. Maintains appropriate reagents and solutions within the department.
- Utilizes the LIS to accurately enter requisitions, verify processing of tests, and look up test results as necessary. Familiar with and able to use HIS to order tests, put in replacement orders and look up results as necessary. Proficient with use of reference lab interfaces to look up test results, order tests, send batches and look up specimen requirements. Maintains confidentiality of computer data.
Practices proper lab safety, follows chemical hygiene plan, correctly disposes of all types of waste. Properly transports specimens safely and appropriately throughout the laboratory. Re-trains as needed on packaging and transporting of biohazard specimens. Aware of procedure and able to process specimens to the State for Bioterrorism drills or events.
