Barrie is also home to the Barrie Institute for Advanced Montessori Studies—one of the largest school-based teacher education programs in the country—and Barrie Camp, a Washington, D.C.-area tradition since the 1950s.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Admission and Head of Middle & Upper School, the Dean of Studies will be responsible for stewarding the academic program and schedule, as well as teaching part-time in a subject area related to the candidate’s area of expertise. This is a full-time, exempt faculty position.
This position addresses three core areas:
Lead administration of key academic policies, including grading, assessment, academic integrity, learning management system usage, and student performance reporting policies
Coordinate academic schedule, including athletics, arts, and student life programming
Facilitate annual course development, proposal, and approval processes
Oversee the work of the Online Course Manager
Work with Middle and Upper School Head on hiring processes
Meet with families and students to review course offerings, identify best fits with students' schedules & aptitudes, grant requests, make changes, and communicate about grading or other concerns
Address student & family questions regarding academic policies and classroom experiences throughout the year
Participate in required evening and/or weekend school functions (such as Back to Barrie Night, Admission events, Extended Study Week Showcase, Graduation, etc.)
Other duties as assigned.
Create the Middle and Upper School Class & Duty Schedule annually
Oversee student course registration & enrollment within the Student Information System
Ensure accuracy and completeness of grade & assessment records each trimester
Update and maintain a published set of course descriptions
Fulfill records requests, including alumni transcript requests and transferring student record requests
Provide and analyze data to inform decision-making about course offerings, scheduling, and academic policies
Lead comment review process for progress reports and report cards (6 times a year)
