Job Summary
The Technical Writer will be supporting US Courts OSCAR (the Online System for Clerkship Application and Review). OSCAR is a secure, user-friendly, web-based system for federal law clerk and appellate staff attorney recruitment. OSCAR's extensive set of features allows users to easily manage every aspect of the hiring process. OSCAR also serves as an informational portal for applicants and law schools to research judges and staff attorney offices hiring practices, preferences, and timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Technical Writer
- Assists in collecting and organizing information required for preparation of program communications, online web content, user manual, training materials, installation guides, proposals, and reports.
- Writes and edits functional descriptions, system specifications, user manuals, special reports, or any other customer deliverables and documents. Develops and prepares program statistical reports, charts, tables and graphs. Provides support for developing and maintain website content, policies, presentations, and other written documents.
- Analyzes internal and external communications and recommends innovative communications channels to include leveraging social media platforms.
- Serves as editorial lead and directs and coordinates all internal and external communications. Assists in determining assignments, setting priorities, monitoring progress, and reporting on program communications and statistical analysis.
- Oversees maintenance of the program’s communication plan and document style guide.
- Manages the text, images, video, audio, and other content on program websites.
- Maintains quality control across the program website.
- Provides directions and assistance to program staff.
- Reviews products to ensure adherence to AOUSC polices and style guide/templates.
- Conducts special projects that may include research, information gathering, and analysis.
Required Skills of the Technical Writer
- Specialized experience includes statistical analysis, analysis of business applications, technical documentation, website content development, and development of communications plans.
- Candidates must be proficient in MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat. Familiar with updating web content including use of a WYSI-WYG and basic HTML.
Desired Skills of the Technical Writer
- Experience with graphic design products such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is preferred
Education and Experience of the Technical Writer
- Minimum of eight years of experience of which at least three years must be specialized
- Bachelor’s degree may include English or literature, social sciences, computer science/ systems, information systems/technology, engineering, software engineering/programming, management, natural sciences, mathematics, or business/finance.
Education And Experience Requirements May Be Substituted with The Following:
- A Master’s Degree (in subjects described above) and four years of generalized experience of which at least three years must be specialized experience.
- No degree and ten years of general experience of which at least eight years must be specialized experience.
