What you'll do

The Chaplain, will work Part Time, Days working collaboratively with local clergy, staff, physicians, and volunteers, is responsible for the provision of Spiritual Care services to meet the spiritual needs of patients and their families across varying faith traditions. The Chaplain provides direct spiritual care to patients and families/caregivers, participates in the assessment of the spiritual needs of patients and documentation of the services provided, upon request from clinical staff; ensures that patients who desire visits are seen in a timely manner and that visits meet program guidelines for confidentiality, ethics, and cross-cultural sensitivity; oversees the policies and procedures for the Spiritual Care Program and updates as needed; recruits, orients, supports and supervises pastoral care volunteers and other administrative support to the Spirtual Care Program; ensures 24-hour on-call coverage for urgent situations as requested.

  • Develop schedules and assignments to ensure coverage according to the departmental plan for all patients.
  • The Chaplain ensures on-call coverage for all emergencies on a 24 hour basis. Is responsible for making arrangements for coverage when it is necessary to be away from Bassett Healthcare Network.
  • As appropriate, if local clergy is available, assures for the celebration weekly services for patients.
  • Incorporates spiritual care into the ongoing organizational life of Bassett Healthcare Network.
  • In accordance with Bassett Healthcare Network policies, interviews, validates references and credentials, in providing quality volunteers to meet the spiritual care requirements of Bassett Healthcare Network.
  • Plans and ensures orientation of new volunteers according to department protocol as demonstrated by volunteers completing an orientation checklist.
  • The Chaplain maintains and communicates current policies and procedures for the Department through annual and ongoing review to ensure compliance with Bassett Healthcare Network policies and applicable regulations and standards.
  • Ensures completion of all volunteer reports and records according to established timeframes.
  • Monitors volunteer performance as demonstrated by regular reviews.
  • The Chaplain develops and/or conducts training and educational programs for department personnel (employed and volunteers).
  • Establishes and maintains a working relationship with local ministry and assists them in their ministry to the patients as requested.
  • Annually develop departmental goals and program objectives in discussion with members of the Supervisor or the Network Spiritual Care Team.
  • The Chaplain operates the Department within the approved budget.
  • Develop and maintain clearly defined duties and responsibilities for personnel within the Department through current job descriptions.
  • Adheres to standards of practice as set forth in policy and guidelines to assure patient safety.
  • Uses supplies and institutional resources in a financially responsible manner.
  • Maintains an orderly, clean and safe work environment and personal appearance.
  • Assists in the training process of students or orientation of new personnel.
  • Participates in staffing patterns that reflect variable demands in service.
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude, uses flexibility and innovation while problem solving.
  • Demonstrates collaborative practice, support and respect for each team member.
  • Participates in departmental / organizational committees.
  • Demonstrates initiative in expanding and sharing knowledge.
  • Participates in continued education through attendance and presentations at in-service sessions.
  • Communicates with patients and coworkers using means to protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Adheres to hospital policies with particular attention to protect patient's rights and confidentiality.
  • The Chaplain communicates necessary information to supervisor or team leader in support of unit, departmental and facility standards and policies.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

What we need from you

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theology or related field, required.

Experience:

  • Previous supervisor experience, required.
  • Previous clinical Spiritual Care experience, preferred.

License/ Certification:

  • Minimum of four Clinical Spiritual Education (CPE) units, required, as well as a willingness to continue training in this area.
  • Valid, NYS Drivers License, required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Light Work - Exerting up to 20 lbs of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg control requires exertion of forces greater than that of sedentary work and if the worker sits most of the time, the job is considered light work.
  • Occasional: typing/ clerical/ dexterity, kneeling, lifting, visual acuity (color, depth, perception), walking. 
  • Frequent: seeing/ monitor/ computer use, standing. 

Hazards: 

  • Frequent: bodily fluids/ bloodborne exposure. 

Travel:

  • Extensive Travel - You should expect to travel every week
