Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a OT Cybersecurity Researcher to work in our Cyber R&D department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our UB facility with every other Friday off.

Operational Technology (OT) Cybersecurity Researcher theorizes, organizes and participates in the conceptualization, development and maintenance of custom code used to analyze network traffic and proprietary protocols, develops attack and defense methodology and code on high-risk computer networks. You will report to the manager over Information & Cyber Research Security.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Develop technical solutions for information operations and analysis related to national security topics including intrusion analysis, systems and vulnerabilities, network security, advanced analytic tools and data visualization techniques and other areas. Work with senior engineers and other junior researchers to identify security issues of existing platforms and applications.

  • Develop concepts, algorithms and methods for detecting and preventing network attacks.

  • Develop and maintain code used to find weaknesses in systems to verify patch effectiveness.

  • Conduct penetration testing and vulnerability assessments.

  • Perform advanced analysis and reverse engineering of various type of computer equipment and code to identify suspect executables and source code.

  • Write scripts and develop software utilities to automate security analysis efforts. Working with senior program/technical staff plans, conducts and supervises assignments, reviews progress and evaluates results.

  • Work with customers and senior engineers to develop requirements, produces and test code, and provide necessary documentation.

  • Maintain awareness of potential sponsors and their current objectives and funding levels.

  • Build customer relationships and support customer request with briefings and papers.

  • Positive and interactive customer interface (verbal, written) are required.

  • Author technical papers, reports and proposals for internal and external release and represent INL by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

  • Participate in both National and International forums for the development of significant new concepts or novel approaches to Cyber Security.

  • Set and implement high standards for safety, security, environmental compliance and Mission Delivery, and oversees successful project/program execution consistent with INL's standards and procedures to identify and mitigate risk (cost, schedule and quality).

Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
  • PR0100 - 8 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree, or BS or higher

  • PR0200 - 10 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree, or BS plus 2, or MS plus 1

  • Preferred degree disciplines are: Computer Science/Engineering, Cyber Operations, Math, or other technical degree with a Computer Science/Engineering background.

  • Vulnerability assessments, penetration tests, and red teaming in Operational Technology (OT) and embedded system environments.

  • Understanding of cybersecurity scenario development, testing generation, and developing and providing training for red teams against OT and embedded system infrastructure

  • Propose, lead, and conduct research and development for cybersecurity on OT and embedded systems.

  • Linux, Solaris, and Windows based operating systems and development tool sets.

  • Experience searching and sorting algorithms, decision trees, and memory management.

  • Familiarity with Zero Day exploits. Familiarity with packet level programming. Strong personal (hobby) interest in computers and programming and academic training.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

  • PR0100 - 210 ($95,928 - $158,232) Or PR0200 - 220 ($110,316 - $181,956)
