For the EAYL Program participants, we are looking for a person who is dedicated to compassionate patient care and wants to be work in a hospital setting where you are a part of a dynamic healthcare team. This position requires no previous nursing or healthcare work experience. However, it does require a person who is dedicated to learning patient care and using those skills to make a difference in people’s lives every day.
What does a Patient Care Technician do? The Patient Care Technician assists our nursing staff to provide for our patients’ physical and emotional needs. Some basic skills and tasks will include: bathing, helping the patient with toileting needs, bed-making, assisting the patient walk/move, feeding, taking vital signs, and entering data into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
This is EAYL Program is a paid training opportunity to meet the requirements for a Patient Care Technician at BayCare hospitals.
If selected, you will be hired for the EAYL program as a Patient Care Technician – Student for a 5 week program that includes classroom and clinical training.
After successful completion of training in the Earn-As-You-Learn Patient Care Technician Program you will meet the requirements to be hired as a Patient Care Technician with BayCare. The Patient Care Technician positions are available with all BayCare hospitals. You will find a posting for the EAYL Program in each Tampa Bay area county or region.

EAYL Program Information and Requirements:
High school diploma or GED, stable job history, and clear background check.
Attendance is required at every class and clinical shift. The school program schedule is five (5) days a week for five (5) weeks. Classroom hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Clinical hours are 6:20 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Start date would be March 18 th, 2024.
Tuition and books are paid for by BayCare. Additional items, such as scrubs and a wristwatch (with second hand), are the student’s responsibility.
Commitment to work at a BayCare hospital full time for 1 year after program completion is required.
This is a benefits-eligible position (medical, dental, paid time off, and much more).
Rate of pay is $15.00 an hour for class time and clinical time. After program completion, the PCT salary is $16.01 an hour. The PCT night shift differential (for hours 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.) is $2.00/hour and weekend hours differential is $.75/hour.
Upon completion of the EAYL Program the Patient Care Technician will:
Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.
Assist the nursing staff in the delivery of patient care as directed by the RN.
Provide basic nursing responsibilities such as: bathing, helping the patient with toileting needs, bed-making, assisting the patient walk/move, feeding, taking vital signs, and entering data into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
Additional training will be provided for additional technical skills such as sterile technique, and urinary catheter insertion.
The work commitment is one year upon completion of the program.
Hours for Patient Care Technician positions are:
Full time hours are 3 twelve-hour shifts per week and every other weekend.
Day shifts are 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Nights are 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM with shift differential.
