Computational Chemist
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibilities of this role, Computational Chemist, are to:
- Lead computational chemistry analyses supporting the Emerging Technologies platforms including structure and ligand-based compound design, virtual screening, cheminformatics for molecular target selection, and in silico modeling for small synthetic molecules and biomolecules such as peptides, oligonucleotides and/or natural compounds;
- Enable data-based solutions by providing High Throughput Screening (HTS) analysis, data visualizations, conducting structural bioinformatics, homology modeling, target class similarity assessments, and target-based design of compounds;
- Actively collaborating to drive computational initiatives with the Small Molecules Computational Life Sciences and Crop protection discovery teams as well as our external partners;
- Predict compound physicochemical properties for compound design/selection and providing tractability assessments for de novo chemical syntheses;
- Generate documentation to secure Intellectual Property (IP) for all projects.
WHO YOU ARE
Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE (Leadership Integrity Flexibility Efficiency) values. More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Computational Chemistry, or related field;
- Demonstrated impact in applying computational chemistry principles to drive the design and progression of small molecules (early-late stage) in a team setting, as evidenced by peer reviewed publications and/or patent applications;
- Expertise in common computational packages such as those from Schrodinger or Chemical Computing Group;
- Strong communication skills to actively network and leverage life science computational communities across Pharmaceutical, Plant Biotechnology and Small Molecule organizations;
- Practical working knowledge of medicinal and/or agrochemical design principles.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Four or more years of relevant experience in computational chemistry within an academic, pharmaceutical, agrochemical or biotechnology setting;
- Practical working knowledge of medicinal and/or agrochemical design principles with preferred experience in plant, insect, and/or plant pathogen systems;
- Experience with novel modalities including application of computational workflows for biomolecules such as peptides (e.g., constrained, cyclic, unnatural), sRNA, natural products, or high molecular weight molecules (e.g., bifunctional molecules);
- Experience identifying and modeling interactions that govern novel chemical modalities (e.g., protein interactions, allosteric sites), SAR and computational docking experiments;
- Expertise in data visualization and analysis;
- Ability to initiate and manage multiple innovative projects in parallel;
- Ability to influence outside the novel modalities community and communicate foundational elements of molecular modeling to other scientists;
- Ability to travel independently both domestically and internationally up to 5-10%.
