General Summary:
The Nursing Assistant/Unit Secretary (NA/US) position involves the delivery of clinical nursing assistant services to patients. The NA/US functions under the supervision of a licensed nurse or therapist who provides care which does not require the judgment and skills of a licensed professional. After competency verification, the nursing assistant may deliver patient care services to the infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. The care may include, but is not limited to, the following: bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, ambulating, transferring, feeding, observing, and reporting the general well-being of the person(s) to whom they are providing care. Coordinates clerical duties of a diverse and confidential nature to maintain efficiency of patient care areas.
Responsibilities:
1. Follows nursing assistant plan of care established by the Registered Nurse within a specified timeframe; including, but not limited to, mouth care, bathing, AM and PM care, assistance with ambulation, transfers to chair and/or bed, taking and documenting vital signs, and recording accurate intake and output. Documents all patient care delivered according to established policies and procedures.
2. Performs duties with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on the assigned units.
3. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards.
4. Communicate relevant patient information to a professional nurse within appropriate time based on level of urgency. Reports problems immediately to a professional nurse.
5. Answer intercom or call lights in a timely, courteous manner, with appropriate communication to patient and/or professional nurse.
6. Performs patient care based on established guidelines to diagnostic and therapeutic exams; i.e., NPO for labs or x-rays, OR, diet changes related to tests, enema-related tests.
7. Perform safety and suicide precaution sitter duties as assigned.
8. Assists other members of nursing team and/or ancillary departments as requested.
9. All other duties as assigned, within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
REQUIRED Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of a formalized Nursing Assistant Training Program through an approved site -or- an a ctively enrolled Nursing Student who has completed first rotation of clinicals and/or equivalent clinical simulation course.
- Credential(s): Basic Life Support BLS
- Experience: No experience required.
Preferred Education, Credential(s) and Experience:
- Education: Certificate Program
Medical Terminology - Credential(s): Certified Nursing Assistant CNA
- Experience: Six months in providing basic care to patients in a clinical setting. Experience in Home Health Care, acute care, rehabilitation, or Nursing home is helpful.
