Sustainability Specialist

Job Summary:
BB&E is looking for a Sustainability Specialist to assist NASA Ames Environmental Research Center Support Services Contract (ESS) under our Advisory and Assistance Services (A&AS) Business Line (BL), to provide environmental services to the NASA Ames Program Team.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Will lead and partner with client (NASA Ames Research Center) to develop and implement sustainability strategies, including facilitating cross-organizational collaboration, official level communication, education and outreach, analysis, performance benchmarking, and reporting. Specific tasks will include:
  • Lead across multiple organizations charged with reducing environmental impact from activities at NASA Ames.
  • Research, and communicate to the client, any emerging changes in federal, state, and local regulations, Executive Orders, and industry best practices relating to sustainability.
  • Support the Sustainability Program with data collection, including the NASA HQ recycling and affirmative procurement data call. Evaluate data and proactively coordinate with applicable Ames organizations to ensure applicable and accurate reporting of data.
  • Prepare an annual environmental sustainability report documenting the successes of the sustainability program. Review environmental sustainability reports from other NASA facilities and incorporate the findings of the five-year sustainability plan metrics into the report.
  • Prepare and submit a multitude of reports in support of the Sustainability Program, including the pollution prevention (P2) and hazardous waste minimization plan/report, the biennial P2 report on recyclable materials, the Cathode Ray Tube materials handler report, recycling and sustainable acquisition report, etc.
  • Monitor, track, and report on sustainability indicators such as water and energy use, chemical use, waste diversion, sustainable acquisition, etc.
  • Assist Ames Procurement in determining compliance with NASA’s Strategic Sustainability Plan (SSPP) requirements for sustainable acquisition as a requirement in contracts where applicable. Track and update sustainability performance metrics in accordance with NASA’s SSPP to include updated Center sustainability performance metrics, sustainability projects, and sustainability initiatives based on information in existing databases and other data obtained from applicable Ames organizations. Coordinate with applicable Ames organizations to ensure applicable and accurate reporting of sustainability metrics.
  • Provide technical analysis and guidance on water conservation to internal proponents and external applicants of NASA programs, projects, or activities.
  • Prepare technical content for outreach materials (e.g., pamphlets, handouts, exhibits and displays, and electronic media), and support outreach events like Earth Day, and National Pollution Prevention Week.
  • Respond to requests for information regarding NASA Ames’ Sustainability Program and serve as a Sustainability Ambassador for the Center.
  • Prepare agendas and meeting minutes for monthly Green Team meetings. Publicize meetings and work with Ames’ Technical Manager to increase Center awareness of sustainability.
  • Attend meetings and brief client on any new knowledge gained and/or outcome of decisions related to sustainability.
  • Conduct reviews and make recommendations to increase purchases of products with environmentally preferable attributes such as biobased, recycled content, non-ozone depleting, energy efficient, water efficient, etc. and identify environmentally preferable alternatives.
  • Review projects which may affect sustainability, pollution prevention, affirmative procurement, or recycling at Ames and provide comments to client.
  • Participate in environmental audits of facilities to identify opportunities for reduction in hazardous materials use, hazardous waste generation, solid waste generation, composting activities, and increased waste diversion/recycling, while delivering cost savings to the client and increasing efficiency and environmental sustainability and compliance.
  • Prepare technical content and support web designer to update the Ames Environmental Management Division web page.
  • Assist with Ames' Environmental Management System activities to include Pollution Prevention, Recycling, Affirmative Procurement and Sustainability Practices.
Job Qualifications and Skills:
Experience:
  • Five (5) to Ten (10) years of experience participating in successful collaborative team environments, communicating with governmental organizations, and coordinating interactions between multiple groups. Must have excellent people skills and be able to coordinate multiple simultaneous projects.
  • At least two years of sustainability experience required—preferably with in the federal market.
  • Must have knowledge of sustainability and environmental requirements and be able to gather, analyze and report on data from a variety of sources.
  • Must be organized, self-motivated, detail oriented, and have the ability to work toward high-level goals.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to learn quickly, are required.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office Suite software.
  • Knowledge of recycled, biobased, and less toxic materials; federal sustainability requirements; environmental management systems; environmental regulations; and environmental auditing, preferred.
Must be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter NASA Ames physical and network spaces.
Education
BS in environmental science or engineering, related discipline, or equivalent. Coursework and/or studies in sustainability science is a plus.
