What are the responsibilities and job description for the Supervisor Operating Room position at Beacon Health System?

Reports to the Director. Assesses the physiological, psychological, social, educational, and spiritual needs of the patient. Supports and enforces philosophy and standards of Elkhart General Hospital (EGH). Assumes responsibility for certain Center Core activities such as blood refrigerator monitoring, assigning out-patient arrival times, distributing films, sending for blood, counting narcotics, etc.

Leadership

  • Supports and enforces philosophy and standards of Elkhart General Hospital.
  • Works with UM to encourage staff input and to foster a clear understanding of the directions and goals for the unit and nursing division.
  • Communicates with ancillary departments and house supervisor as needed to promote and maintain quality patient care.
  • Acts as a resource person to unit staff for providing surgical care and dealing with customer issues.
  • Contributes to the monitoring and evaluation of staff performance.
  • Communicates with Unit Manager to assure staffing needs are met appropriately and assignments are appropriate based on staff competence and skill level.
  • Role models patient care delivery and professionalism.
  • Supervises and evaluates patient care given by staff.
  • Contributes to policy and procedure and standards of care/practice development.

Assessment/Planning

  • Assesses the physiological, psychological, social, educational, and spiritual needs of the patient through the use of observation and interview skills.
  • Assesses and differentiates emergency surgical situations which require immediate action and responds appropriately based on nursing judgment/standards.
  • Assesses schedule throughout shift and plans for staffing and equipment needs as changes occur.
  • Creates and monitors changes of the call schedule, in a timely manner, for all staff required to take call.
  • Assesses educational needs of staff and works with perioperative educator to assure those needs have been met.
  • Assesses staffing needs for future schedules, works closely with schedulers and anesthesia providers to assure all cases will be appropriately staffed based on policy and to provide safe patient care.
  • Approves vacation requests based on department needs.

Intervention

  • Collaborates with multiple disciplines in formal/informal problem solving.
  • Utilizes organizational skill to prioritize and coordinate the needs of patients, surgeons, anesthesiologists and other ancillary departments.
  • Communicates complete and accurate information in a professional and timely manner to co-workers, physicians, and other disciplines.
  • Assumes responsibility for certain center core activities such as blood refrigerator monitoring, assigning out-patient arrival times, distributing films, sending for blood, counting narcotics, etc.
  • Monitors staff behavior and addresses those behaviors not consistent with the values of the organization. They may be addressed directly or by reporting to the UM or Director of Surgical Services.

Evaluation

  • Communicates through written and verbal methods of schedule progress.
  • Revises schedule based on ongoing assessment of emergency patient needs.
  • Gives 3-11 shift evaluation of surgery schedule progress upon their arrival.
  • Continuously monitors case flow and keeping the schedule on time as much as possible.
  • Investigates situations that interfere with the schedule staying on time.
  • Evaluates the delivery of care based on hospital policy and AORN standards of care.
  • Reports any situation not meeting policy or standards.

Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department

  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an Associate's Degree or Professional Training. Current license as a professional nurse in the state of Indiana. A minimum of 1 to 2 years of job-related experience. One to two years clinical experience in related field is required. After January 1, 2014, candidates are required to have or obtain a BSN within five (5) years of employment as a Registered Nurse or will be have the option to become certified in their area of specialty. The certification must be based off of accrediting body standards. Prefer certification in area of practice.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of general principles of leadership.
  • Knowledge of hospital and nursing policies/procedures.
  • Theory and clinical knowledge in area of practice.

Working Conditions

  • Medium degree of mental stress with occasional periods of high stress due to supervisory function, need to make nursing judgments, patient change in condition and frequent physician interactions.
  • At risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
  • Must be able to report to work location within 30 minutes when On Call.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
