Beacon Light Behavioral Health System is looking for a Community and School Based (CSBBH) Worker/Behavioral Health Technician who is responsible to provide behavioral support to the child or adolescent and their family in specified areas of social, behavioral and emotional concern and needs that have been identified by the child/youth and family and addressed in the treatment plan. To provide support to the child that facilitates the growth and development of the child. To assist the in the development of therapeutic support skills in the parents, family members, educators, social supports, service providers and others to ensure that such support is maintained for the child as professional interventions are decreased and terminated. To provide case management support to individuals and families enrolled in the program including but not limited to attending clinical team meetings and scheduling coordination of ISPT meetings.

Beacon Light has partnered with various school districts in Pennsylvania to offer Mental Health treatment in a flexible Community and School-Based Behavioral Health (CSBBH) model.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A bachelor's degree in a Human Services related field.
  • Two years of paid experience preferred but not required in a clinical setting.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

This position gives preference to individuals with an active driver's license and a DMV check that is clear. Position may require travel 25-50% of the time in the local community or to assist with individuals attending required appointments or visits.

SUMMARY

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) would be utilized to implement the therapeutic interventions and strategies as identified in the ITP and with the oversight of the BC or MT.  BHT services provide one-on-one interventions to a client in the home, school, or community setting in attempts to maintain the child within the natural setting of their home and community.BHT services can include crisis intervention techniques, immediate behavioral reinforcements, emotional support, time-structuring activities, time-out strategies, passive restraints (procedures that do not restrict freedom of movement) such as hand over hand, hand holding, graduated guidance, tactile timed touching, etc. (when necessary), and additional psychosocial rehabilitative activities as prescribed in the treatment plan.  The BHT transfers skills to caretakers in domains where the individual is requiring the most assistance (school, home, community). 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Have a certification as a Board-Certified Assistant Behavioral Analyst (BCaBA), Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), or Board-Certified Autism Technician (BCAT), or
  • Have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and complete 40 hours of training covered in the RBT Task List (as evidenced by certification that includes the name of the responsible trainer whom is certified in BCBA or BCaBA), or
  • Have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the provision of behavioral health services. 
  • Additional education/experience would qualify if in accordance with the current state regulations. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write session notes as identified by proper documentation guidelines.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties the employee performs that although important do not have as major an impact on the delivery of services to our clientele:

  • Knowing and supporting the agency mission statement.
  • Actively participating on Agency committees when requested.

  • Providing assistance to individuals, families, guardians and significant others needed to cope with visitations, decisions pertinent to the individuals; treatment and medical issues, placement, transfer and discharge.
  • Functioning as a liaison between individuals, facility, families and the community.
  • Keeping communication open between all levels of staff.
  • Communicating necessary information to other staff.
  • Interacting with the resident's in a respectful manner that is appropriate for the situation.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the client's program in a thorough and timely manner. 
  • Ensuring that needed materials (handouts, outlines, syllabi) are available for sessions.
  • Assisting with monitoring quality initiatives.
  • Providing support for the family's effort to stabilize the youth and to promote age-appropriate behavior.
  • Working with the family and other members of the treatment team by participating in the inter-disciplinary treatment team meetings when necessary.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Duties the employee performs that have a major impact on the delivery of services to our clientele:

  • Participating in one (1) hour of supervision each week if working 37.5 hours per week, or one (1) hour of supervision two (2) times a month if working less than 37.5 hours a week. 
  • Participating in collaboration/consultation with clinical staff on specific cases at minimum one (1) hour per month.
  • Working as a member of a team including being supportive and friendly to staff, treating others with respect, keeping personal problems away from work, splitting duties equally amongst co-workers, assisting co-workers when requested and welcoming new employees, giving them  extra support and encouragement. 
  • Attending and completing scheduled required annual training. 
  • Reporting to work in a timely manner when scheduled.
  • Provide an appropriate role model for staff and the individuals they serve in appearance, actions, manner of speech, etc.
  • Following school policies and classroom protocol.  Including signing in when entering the school and signing out when exiting the school.  A visitor badge with your agency picture must be worn within the schools at all times. (Protocol for badge requirement is school specific and therefore each district protocol will be followed).
  • Following through on directives given to him/her by administrative staff.
  • Interacting with clients and families in a respectful manner that is appropriate for the situation.
  • Providing one-on-one direct intervention with the child in the classroom, in the community and in the home under the direction of the lead clinician.
  • Documenting important information and data in a timely and professional manner. 
  • Participating in clinical collaboration/supervision with the lead clinician at a minimum one (1) hour per month to review the assigned individuals services are being provided for.
    • All new BHTs will receive 6 hours of onsite supervision during the provision of services to a client prior to working independently with a client, unless previous BHT experience can be documented. 
    • BHTs with less than 2 years' experience or without a qualifying certification, will receive one (1) hour of direct observation, from the lead clinician or Clinical Director, of the provision of individual services to the child every two (2) months during the implementation of the Intensive Treatment Plan (ITP). 
    • All other BHTs will receive one (1) hour of direct observation, from the lead clinician or Clinical Director, during the provision of individual services to the child every four (4) months during implementation of the treatment plan. 
  • Using the basics of crisis management that supports recovery and safety and the use of strategies to prevent the development of a crisis; no hands on intervention as this is a restraint free community program; should the individual require immediate crisis intervention, staff will utilize least restrictive measures and notify the care giver (school personnel, parent/guardian) as soon as possible for necessary physical intervention. 
  • Staff will utilize interventions and strategies when redirecting behaviors that have been identified in the treatment plan.  This may include prompting, cueing, redirection, planned ignoring, time-out strategies, or other techniques as identified by the treatment team.
  • Providing immediate behavioral reinforcements, emotional support, time structuring activities and other psychosocial rehabilitative treatment interventions to engage the youth in appropriate activities as provided in the treatment plan.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of services which includes documentation of all Behavioral health technician Services provided to the youth.

COMPETENCY EXPECTATIONS

Must demonstrate during training period, first 90 days in position, and annually thereafter, competencies in the following areas:

  1. Working with MH/IDD Clients
  2. Working in School, Home, and/or Community
  3. Proper documentation of sessions including dates, times, interventions and transfer of skills.

  • Working indoors

The employee is occasionally required to:

  • Be exposed to individuals who have the potential to be hiv-positive, have hepatitis or other communicable diseases.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

This position requires participation in ongoing mandatory trainings while employed.  Training requirements are detailed in the Training Plan which is maintained by the Human Resources Department.  Along with their supervisor, each employee is responsible for reviewing the Training Plan to determine individual training requirements and completing those requirements in a timely manner.

Staff will comply with the initial and annual training requirements identified in their individual training plan.  An individual training plan will be developed and maintained annually in conjunction with their probation and annual employee evaluations.

PHYSICAL/HEALTH ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS

This position is required to have a pre-employment physical.

DIRECT SUPERVISION

This position does not provide direct administrative supervision to employees.
