Description
The Shredder Operator’s primary responsibilities are to operate and maintain the shredder equipment used in the recycling process to efficiently separate and recover valuable ferrous and non-ferrous materials from recycled waste. Shredder operation and maintenance is performed in compliance with the Company’s safety standards and applicable federal and state regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate and monitor the shredder plant equipment, including feeders, screeners, conveyors, separators, and other machinery to ensure smooth and efficient operation.
Monitor the flow of materials through the shredder and pick houses, making adjustments as necessary to optimize material recovery and minimize downtime, including closely watching the conveyor of incoming scrap materials for “heavies” or other things that could damage the equipment and clearing the material between different commodities.
Maintain accurate records of production data, including material throughput, auto bodies processed, quality, and any incidents or downtime.
Conduct routine inspections and maintenance on shredder and processing equipment in conjunction with the maintenance department to identify and address any issues or malfunctions promptly, using mechanical prints and various tools such as welders, torches, and other fabricating tools.
Keep outside areas neat and clean, ensuring scrap and yard debris are appropriately processed or disposed, and clearing the shredder at the end of the day.
Collaborate with other team members to improve operational efficiency, quality, and safety, representing the company in a processional and ethical manner consistent with company values.
Applies knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to processing equipment and maintenance work while following all safety policies and procedures.

Work is performed in a loud and dusty outdoor environment. Must be able to work in all weather conditions
Requirements
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent
Work Experience
2 years in maintenance preferred
2 years in heavy equipment operation preferred
Previous experience in metal recycling or manufacturing preferred
Skills and Knowledge
Strong background of machine repair, machining, and welding
Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems
Proficiency with basic hand/power tools, measuring devices, and electrical testing instruments
Knowledge of metal identification and sorting techniques
Ability to lift 25lbs frequently and 80lbs occasionally
Ability to perform assigned duties with little or no supervision or instruction
Ability to do basic math and communicate in English both written and verbally
Ability to comprehend and follow written procedures, container labels and all safety precautions
Ability to lead other employees
Attention to detail
Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
Willing to work overtime and weekends when necessary
Valid driver’s license
