General Summary:
The Biostatistician will apply complex data management and a variety of intermediate and advanced statistical techniques and technical skills to promote the collection, analysis and interpretation of data arising from research studies. This work may include providing statistical consultation on study design and data preparation, assistance with the statistical aspects of manuscripts, posters, abstracts and grant applications.
Essential Duties:
1. Consultation on study design including identifying research questions, choice of study design, sample size and power considerations, protocol development, preparation of statistical sections of an IRB application, and creation of a survey or questionnaire.
2. Participates in data analysis, data visualization, statistical analysis, experimental design, and database development. Preparation of randomization lists, work with investigators to set up data files and data cleaning for research projects including formatting and coding.
3. Provides bioinformatics analysis for and communicates results with investigators and identifies next steps for analyses.
4. Conducts statistical analysis of data, preparation of statistical reports, summarizing results, statistical model-building, assistance with manuscript and abstract preparation, as well as responding to reviewer comments.
5. Preparation of randomization lists, work with investigators to set up data files and data cleaning for research projects including formatting and coding, considerations with EMR data pulls and use of databases.
6. Provide statistical services for data safety monitoring committees, including report preparation and/or active membership.
7. Contributes ideas to automate or improve existing analysis methods.
8. Assists with establishing and documenting protocols or best practices for common research tasks.
9. Assists with grant applications and statistical education.
10. Manages project responsibilities with decreasing levels of supervision or regular support and takes initiative to complete project-specific responsibilities with minimal supervision.
11. Perform other tasks as requested by the department Director.
Standard Qualifications:
A. Education / Training: MSc or PhD in statistics with statistical consulting or another related field with strong analytical skills required. Expertise in data analysis/interpretation is essential with particular emphasis on diagnostic/predictive model building. Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning is considered essential.
B. Work Experience: MSc with two years’ experience; prior work experience in public health, epidemiology, biomedical research, is desirable. Descriptive analysis skills and applying modern statistical methods in modeling of data required. Experience with combining multiple omics datasets, bioinformatic expertise and database design is preferred.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration: None
D. Other Qualifications: Accomplished technical writing and computer programming skills required. Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills required. Must be proficient in at least two statistical languages such as SAS, R, STATA, or SPSS. Experience with other statistical software preferred. Willingness to learn new statistical methods and new software. The incumbent should be able to document all aspects of analyses. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize heavy workload and function both autonomously and as member of a team.
