GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Music Therapist is responsible for providing therapeutic music opportunities and assisting children with coping skills during health care experiences. Utilizing developmentally appropriate music activities, the Music Therapist provides support to children and families in order to lessen the stress of the hospital experience. The Music Therapist acts as a liaison to the community for music programs and philanthropy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Assess children and families at various stress points throughout their health care experience. Identify relevant data regarding the child and family to develop a comprehensive assessment and initiate a plan of care. Identify developmental and psychosocial factors and their implications regarding the child's healthcare experience in order to plan appropriate goals and interventions. Evaluate and document assessments, goals, interventions, outcomes and significant events. Modify care plans as needed. Make appropriate referrals when necessary.

2. Based upon assessment of child and family, provide goal directed, evidenced-based music interventions to encourage expression, socialization, pain management, process information and promote development. Offer music therapy interventions to minimize distress, promote empowerment, and provide opportunities for emotional intimacy and relaxation with families and caregivers. Support families through meaningful time spent together in a positive, creative way.

3. Functioning as partners with Child Life Specialists and as members of the multidisciplinary team, the music therapist implements programs with groups or individuals addressing continuum of outcomes. Collaborates with health care team to enhance communication, foster Patient and Family-Centered Care and maximize positive outcomes.

4. Identifies available resources and promotes relationships with community organizations to assist with fiscally responsible purchases and donations to support the program. Partner with community and arts organizations and act as a liaison to offer music opportunities for patients, families and the community.

5. Develops and implements special music events for patients and families. Coordinates music events with community partners when necessary.

6. Act as resource for volunteers and provide direction/feedback as needed. Coordinates, trains, and supervises students in majors related to departmental programs during their field-work/internship experiences

7. Maintain safety, storage and function of musical instruments by following toy cleaning and safety processes.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. A. Education / Training:

· Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy or related field from a school accredited by American Music Therapy Association or equivalent.

B. Work Experience:

· Two years of music therapy experience in inpatient or outpatient setting working with children and families.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

· MT-BC (Board-certified Music Therapist) required.

D. Other Qualifications:

· Excellent interpersonal skills required

· Pleasant singing voice, mastery of multiple instruments and songwriting skills required.

· Excellent technical computer skills including video making and recording music required.

· Requires knowledge in psychology, medicine, child development and music.

· Demonstrates an independent work initiative, sound judgment, diplomacy, tact and professional demeanor

· Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

· Strong knowledge of relevant music and materials

· Culturally sensitive to the diversity of families in development and implementing supportive programs and providing services

· Must have a working knowledge of the principles of Patient and Family Centered Care.

· Must know and adhere to the ethics of the American Music Association, assume responsibility for own professional behavior, and be able to work effectively with staff, children and families of all ages, races, cultures and belief systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

A. Physical Effort:

· This position requires the ability to lift up to 40 lbs and communicate effectively with patients families and staff.

B. Work Environment:

· The Music Therapist must feel comfortable working in a small space with patients who have contagious illnesses.
