Beaver Creek Archaeology, Inc., a cultural resource management (CRM) consultancy with offices in Bismarck, ND and Artesia, NM, is seeking a talented individual to join our team as a Part-Time Assistant Architectural Historian. BCA conducts project work throughout the central-western United States, with a significant focus on the Great Plains region. The primary role is to research and effectively communicate the findings, methodologies, and significance of architectural historical investigations to various interested parties, including state and federal agency reviewers and BCA clients. Additionally, the Part-Time Architectural Historian is responsible for making eligibility recommendations for historic structures in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The position supports the analysis and historic documentation of the architectural history aspects of a variety of projects, including pedestrian surveys, architectural surveys, and HABS and HAER documentation.

Position Overview
This position can be remotely based or a hybrid position. The successful candidate can expect to regularly work 20 hours a week during regular business hours (Central Time Zone). Compensation will be commensurate with the applicant’s level of education and previous experience. Successful candidates may have the opportunity to transition into a full-time position with accompanying benefits.

The Assistant Architectural Historian assists the architectural historian in evaluating, researching, and accurately contextualizing architectural resources for overseeing agencies, helping to inform agencies’ project decisions and recommended site treatment measures of architecturally significant properties and in some cases assist with Section 106 mitigation projects.

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Report Preparation: Create comprehensive and accurate technical reports that summarize architectural fieldwork, including cultural context.
  • Historic Research: Utilize diverse sources for research purposes and synthesize the gathered information into easily understandable and concise formats.
  • Interpretation: Explain the nature of architecturally significant properties and their relevance to historical or cultural contexts.
  • Writing site forms: drafting architectural site forms that catalogue the nature of a site and evaluate its historic integrity and significance.
  • Compliance Documentation: Assist in the preparation of documents required for regulatory compliance, specifically Cultural Resource Management (CRM) reports, ensuring they meet industry standards and regulations.
  • Editing and Proofreading: Review and edit reports and documents for clarity, consistency, and adherence to style guidelines. Ensure that all information is accurate and well-organized.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the architectural historian and other team members to gather information and ensure that reports align with project objectives, agency mandates, and client requirements.
  • Quality Control: Maintain quality control procedures to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of archaeological documentation. Verify that all information is properly cited and referenced.
  • Visual Aids: Incorporate maps, illustrations, photographs, and diagrams into reports to enhance the understanding of archaeological findings. Ensure that visual materials are appropriately sized, captioned, and referenced.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines governing architectural history documentation. Ensure that all reports meet the necessary compliance standards.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay informed about developments in architectural history research methods and technologies, as well as evolving best practices in technical writing.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in History of Art and Architecture with coursework in American architectural history at the undergraduate or graduate level, coupled with relevant professional experience in applying the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) for architectural site eligibility evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience in discussing and describing architectural sites using industry-standard American architectural terminology.
  • Proficient in office software and tools, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe.
  • Strong internet research skills with meticulous attention to detail and exceptional organizational abilities.
  • Proven track record of technical writing proficiency, capable of producing precise and comprehensive reports.
  • Possess critical thinking skills and adept at creative problem-solving.
  • Ability to work effectively both collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Historic Preservation or an equivalent field.
  • Prior experience in writing architectural reports.
  • Familiarity with overarching American history trends, particularly in the Plains region.
  • Experience in archival research methodologies.
  • Previous involvement in projects falling under the regulatory purview of Section 106 of the NHPA.
  • Familiarity with writing and interpreting North Dakota Cultural Resources Survey (NDCRS) site forms.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain seated or standing at a desk, working on a computer, for hours at a time with repetitive hand motions
  • Ability to look at a computer monitor for hours at a time
