CAFETERIA WASTE SORT STATION MONITOR
Grant-Funded Initial Pilot Program
SCHEDULE: Weekdays during the school year, 2 hrs/day
Monday, Tues, Thurs, Friday: 11:15-12:45, Wednesdays 10:15-12:15

Description:
To supervise the cafeteria waste sorting station and assist students in the proper disposal of their lunch waste, which is more environmentally friendly, and also teaches students to be good stewards of our environment. A friendly and patient team player who is willing to proactively guide students through the process will be best suited to this role.
When students are finished eating, they come to the sort station to share unopened food they don’t want, empty their milk/water/juice, trash container and utensils, recycle anything possible, and then compost the food & napkins on their tray. At our High School, 865 Students use the cafeteria, split between two lunch periods. In our other schools, an average of 600 students use the cafeteria spaced over three or four lunch periods.
Responsibilities:
Set up the row of bins daily
Proactively explain what goes in which bin
Answer “where does this go?” questions
General light cleanup duties (ie: wiping spills from the floor)
When needed, use a grabber to pull items from compost or recycling to prevent contamination (ie: a plastic fork accidentally gets tossed in the compost bin)
Wipe “share cart” items with antibacterial wipes before transporting to “share fridge”
Push the share cart into the hallway to move shared foods to the “share fridge”
Perform related work as required, potentially floating to other cafeterias when needed
Must possess the ability to:
Maintain positive relations with students and staff
Be familiar with lunch routines and procedures
Be flexible and adaptable while students learn the waste sorting process
Be comfortable with repetition
Physical and environmental demands:
Sometimes crowded and noisy environment
Stand for approx. 90 mins
Light lifting (5 pounds or less),
Push and pull rolling cart
Bend/twist and reach
Hand mobility: use a grabber handle
