What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator (Outdoors) position at Bell Lumber & Pole?
SCHEDULE:
First Shift: Monday - Friday overtime as needed.
STARTING PAY:
$22.70 with room to increase as you reach milestones or exceptional performance! Pay is based on successful completion of skills-based certifications and may be adjusted if skills are not successfully completed within a reasonable timeframe.
JOB PURPOSE:
Operate the mobile heavy equipment in a careful, safe and efficient manner to move the various products to the different stations at the production plant.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Safely and efficiently operate the mobile heavy equipment machines
- Load and unload the trams, trucks, and rail cars
- Move poles where they need to to, ensuring production continues.
- Move poles and other products throughout the yard for proper storage.
- Assist with other duties if there are no mobile heavy equipment machines.
- Assist the staff in verifying the product/orders going into treatment and leaving the yard are correct.
- Operate so as to minimize any damage to products and property of Bell Lumber & Pole its customers, contractors and employees.
- Hazardous Waste Management duties:

The addendum describes specific duties, policies, and training requirements that are in addition to your regular job description. If you have not signed off on this job description and received the hazardous waste training you are not authorized to perform any duties related to hazardous waste management.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Operating heavy equipment – Front End Loader is preferred.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Must possess basic math skills.
- Must be able to safely and effectively operate mobile heavy equipment.
- Must be able to follow the Bell Lumber & Pole Lock-Out Tag-Out procedures for the mobile heavy equipment machines.
- Must have legible handwriting.
- Must be able to read a tape measure properly.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Must be able to safely ascend and descend ladders.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to count precisely and accurately and to record numbers correctly.
- Should have good communication skills.
- Should be able to work supervised and unsupervised equally well.
- Must be able to properly use and maintain all PPE required for the job.
- Must have good eyesight, and wear corrective lenses if needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, reach with hands and arms and is occasionally required to walk, stand, hear, and to use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by the job include peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. The work environment characteristics are best defined as a small equipment cab environment with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, precipitation or toxic fumes. Employee will have steady exposure to noise as heard in a piece of mobile heavy equipment, at times noise levels will exceed safe working levels. Employee will have light exposure to the chemicals and solutions used in treating wood and cleaning the plant. The job may require overtime.
