POSITION SUMMARY
The Architecture Program at Benedictine College seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Architecture position. The successful candidate will teach 1-2 classical design studios every semester. Additional responsibilities will range from technical studios and/or lecture courses that cover various subjects related to classical design principles, such as, the Orders, hand-drafting, perspective, and/or Beaux-Arts watercolor techniques and ink-rendering. The preferred candidate will be able to teach or co-teach on various topics related to the building arts. The typical responsibilities of this position will consist of teaching approximately 12-credit hours per semester. Priority consideration will be given to applications received by November 28, 2022. The successful candidate will begin August 1, 2023.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to—and delight in—a unique classical architecture program that teaches the art of architecture. From this perspective the successful candidate will help motivate students to understand, preserve, and carry forward classical and vernacular architecture traditions in the service of families and their communities, their institutions, their liturgies, their public processions, etc.
The Architecture Program seeks a candidate who understands, is enthusiastic about, and intends to make a significant contribution to the mission of Benedictine College. Benedictine College is an academic community sponsored by the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey and the sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. To that end, the successful candidate will strive as a member of the college community to support the teachings of Jesus Christ as handed on by the Church.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The responsibilities of the job include teaching undergraduate courses; advising students on curricular and career choices; supervising student workers; assisting student organizations; participating in departmental and campus activities; and serving on college committees. An Assistant Professor of Architecture is expected to begin developing scholarly and professional maturity as evidenced variously by any of the following: publications, built works, presentations of scholarly material at regional and national conferences, and the development of substantial course materials.
Requirements
Education
Preference will be given to applicants with a Master of Architecture or another accredited professional terminal degree in architecture, or the international equivalent. In lieu of a terminal degree in architecture an applicant may provide evidence of substantial experience in teaching and/or creative professional work in fields related to classical architecture. The preferred candidate will exhibit a proficiency in written and oral communication in the English language.
Experience
In lieu of a terminal degree in architecture the preferred candidate will hold a professional licensure in architecture. All candidates must indicate evidence of an emerging trajectory—or an established record—of excellence in teaching and academic scholarship. Preference will be given to applicants who exhibit a passion for, and a deep understanding of, the teaching of classical architecture.
