POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Athletic Bands is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Athletic Band program, including but not limited to recruiting, scheduling, drill and music selection, rehearsal, performances, monitoring academic progress, managing student staff, and fundraising for the 170-member Raven Regiment marching band and pep bands. They will build on Benedictine’s successful recruitment strategies to attract and retain athletic band students through outreach, creative programming, establishing and maintaining traditions, and excellence in teaching. 

The successful candidate will work with the Athletic Director and Director of Bands to advance the athletic band and academic band programs, and to strengthen relationships with alumni and professional associations. The Director of Athletic Bands is required to abide by rules and regulations established by Benedictine College, the Heart of America Athletic Conference, and the NAIA.

In the Department of Music, the successful candidate will teach a partial load in the music education area and applied teaching in their area of expertise. There will also be an opportunity to work with concert ensembles. 

This position requires a leader with a clear vision for excellence in athletic bands and curating school traditions, a student-centered approach, and meaningful impact in the classroom and rehearsal studio.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Direct all aspects of the teaching and management of the Athletic Band program with an emphasis on developing a style of marching, sustaining high quality fundamentals, curating a high standard of music performance, and recruiting / retention.
  • Oversee Assistant Athletic Band Director, graduate assistants, and student workers. 
  •  Recruit in accordance with the NAIA, Heart and Benedictine College policies and procedures. 
  •  Budget management, fundraising, and development of alumni relations.
  •  Tracking the admissions and eligibility process involving recruited students, and for working collaboratively with the Faculty Athletic Representative in this regard.     
  • Responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of the NAIA as it relates to the program.
  • Teach courses in the Department of Music focused in the music education area; including instrumental methods, secondary music methods, elementary music methods, and applied teaching in their area of expertise. 
  • Direct a concert ensemble in the Department of Music. 
  • Supporting the academic and personal development of students in the Athletic Band program and in the Department of Music. 
  • Be a visible, fully integrated member of the College community.
  • Represent Benedictine College and the program in a professional manner.
  • Responsible for being a proponent of the NAIA Champions of Character Program.

Requirements

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Competency Statement(s)

  • Able to demonstrate excellence in teaching music and drill in high-quality marching band program. 
  • At least 5 years of K-12 teaching experience.
  • Able to demonstrate success in teaching music education, applied instrumental courses, and conducting ensembles at the collegiate level. 
  • Able to demonstrate success in recruiting and retaining students. 
  • Strong administrative, collaborative, and interpersonal skills. 
  • High level of personal integrity. 
  • Good organizational ability and computer competency.
  • Outstanding skills in oral and written communication.
  • Outstanding work ethic.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to NAIA rules and regulations. 

Education

  • Master’s degree in Music Education or Instrumental Conducting. (Essential)
  • Doctorate (DMA, PhD, EdD) in Music Education / Instrumental Conducting. (Desirable) (ABD considered)
