Animal Care Attendant
The Animal Care Attendant is responsible for the basic care and maintenance of the shelter animals and their living space. The Animal Care Attendant reports to the Shelter Manager.
Animal Care
- Feed and water animals appropriately,
- Administer medications assist with vaccinations.
- Report any changes in animal condition or behavior
- Bath and brush animals as needed
- Socialize animals as much as possible
- Treat all animals with patience and compassion
- Handle both dogs and cats
Cleaning
- Wash and sanitize food bowls and utensils
- Clean and disinfect floors, kennels, cages, litter boxes
- Launder and fold sheets, towels, and blankets
- Maintain grounds and remove any litter or feces
Organizing
- Label, shelve and organize supplies and donations
- Restock shelter supplies as needed
Paperwork
- Complete and file paperwork as instructed
- All paperwork must be filled out legibly and appropriately
Working conditions
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather
- Kennel areas tend to be noisy
- Contaminants: animal feces and other bodily fluids, infections, diseases and disinfectants will be present.
- Employees are required to wash hands frequently
- Employees may be required to wear protective gloves, masks and other protections for personal safety.
- Possible exposure to bites, scratches, animal waste, and zoonotic diseases
Physical qualifications
- Average vision and hearing
- Physical strength to lift, move and place items up to 50 pounds
- Able handle dogs weighing more than 75 pounds
- Flexibility to perform routine tasks kneeling, crouching, or crawling
- Must be able to stand, bend or walk for long periods of time
- Good manual dexterity and physical coordination
Other qualifications
- At least 18 years old
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to manage animals safely,effectively and with compassion
- Outgoing, pleasant, and courteous behavior is required in all public contact
- Strong commitment to providing the best possible care for the shelter animals
- Proof of Covid-19 vaccination required.
