Summary:

The Campus Architect will report to the Director of Facilities Management and will work hands-on in all aspects of the architectural design and production processes, including defining OPR, programming, space planning, concept sketches through develop of design and construction documents, estimating, bid process and reconciliation, code and zoning compliance, and project management to include oversight of work for compliance to design and budget. Full architectural design and approval will be executed for certain capital projects and collaboration will occur with external design consultants in the development of certain larger capital projects. Oversight and review of AIA contract documentation for projects for which it is required. The Campus Architect is expected to utilize sustainable design practices to the extent feasible on projects. The Campus Architect may or may not directly supervise any College staff members but will need to be skilled at team building and personal communication as the success of most projects will depend on alignment and collaboration of internal colleagues and external contractors. The Campus Architect also should possess strong technical presentation skills and be able to present either self-produced or vendor-produced drawings, technical specifications, code explanations and digital models to various levels of the College community and Administration Leadership.


Minimum Qualifications Required:

Education required to ensure success in this position:
  • Bachelor’s degrees in Architecture
Experience required to ensure success in this position:
  • 6-8 years of experience managing architectural and construction projects preferred, at least 3-5 required.
  • Experience in architectural design and project oversight.
  • Experience negotiating and contracting for architecture, construction or similar services.

Special skills, knowledge and abilities:
  • Experience in project budgeting and management and designing and reviewing designs, drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communications and team building skills to forget effective working relationships with campus colleagues, external design and construction contractor partners and state building and regulatory inspectors. .
  • Ability to interpret and apply codes and regulations pertaining to campus renovation and construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of contractual responsibilities, processes and procedures governed by AIA contractual agreements.
  • Ability to effectively evaluate and oversee the work of subordinate contractors and facilities professionals.
  • Excellent computer skills are required, proficiency with MS Office Suite is essential and should have strong skills with BIM or CAD/CAD similar software.

License, certification, or registration necessary:
  • Must be a Kentucky certified Architect. LEED-AP certification preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License

Physical requirements:
  • Ability to walk and climb extended distances around campus and job sites; ability to inspect in, around, and underneath buildings, foundations, etc.; visual acuity essential.
  • Ability to lift up to forty pounds on occasion.

Environmental conditions:
  • Mix of office work and work on construction sites or in other campus facilities areas

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:
  • Automobile, golf cart


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Establishment of OPR (Owner’s Project Requirement) documentation on projects and compliance to campus standards and GIS documentation.
  • Lead teams of campus colleagues in charette and/or scoping meetings to define programming requirements, space needs for planning and project budget estimates.
  • Complete architectural sketches, drawings and designs throughout the architectural design process from concept through schematic design and design development to construction drawings.
  • Works collaboratively with VP of Operations, General Counsel, Director of Facilities Management and Director of Projects to negotiate and review contracts for design and construction services, outsourced College operations, and other contractual commitments as requested. Assures projects with AIA agreements are negotiated and followed appropriately.
  • Management of capital projects through coordination and oversight of construction partners that can range from architectural design to large construction management to contracted trades work to internally completed projects with Facilities Management team members.
  • Support the VP of Operations, Director of Facilities Management and Director of Projects multi-year capital planning.
  • Knowledge of IBC and other applicable local, state and federal code requirements, including life safety codes and accessibility requirements.
  • Ability to utilize Revit, CAD, BIM or other applicable design software as necessary.
