Brief summary of this position: *
Our program philosophy is that students learn best when instruction is hands-on and student centered, and when they can relate the content to their lives. This is a temporary eight-week position with the Upward Bound/Math Science summer residential program at Berea College. Academy Instructors will work collaboratively and independently to provide students with active learning experiences in content areas, ensuring that students are provided with a rich academic experience that further prepares them for success in high school and eventually college. This position
includes fostering a nurturing environment for self-expression, cooperative learning and student-centered classes, with an emphasis on project-based learning. Instructors are expected to develop curriculum and relate core content to students’ lives, allowing the application of skills to real world scenarios. Instructors are expected to hold students to
high expectations and help them meet their academic potential. Instructors may be required to teach/assist with ACT Prep curriculum. Academy Instructors will lead a project-based academy course for a 6 week period during the UB/MS Summer Program. AI’s will work closely with the Curriculum Specialist and Program Director to develop curriculum and lesson plans for their 6-week Academy course. All staff will participate in a staff training week prior to students arriving on campus.

  • Academy topic ideas will be discussed during the interview process and reviewed by PFE staff and student leadership group. Candidates will submit a plan outlining the academy course topic idea, with an example lesson plan. Keep in mind “project based learning”.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required, Master's degree in education preferred

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Demonstrated teaching experience is essential;
  • One year teaching experience, classroom instruction, counseling, higher education, college access or youth development is required;
  • Leadership and working within a supportive learning-living environment at postsecondary institution or other academic summer c&
  • Experience working with TRIO programs or other disadvantaged youth programs, preferred.

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • Driver’s license required, ability to pass a comprehensive background check.

  • Ability to work in a high energy classroom setting;
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Environmental conditions:

  • High energy office, typical classroom setting, residential dorm and outside, college campus settings. Must strive to create an atmosphere conducive to the students’ learning to be independent persons in a community where diversity and difference are respected.
  • Ability to operate the following vehicles and/or equipment: Computer, telephone, other office related equipment.

Primary duties and responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Develop and implement curriculum for groups of students in a STEAM related academic topic. Curriculum will be taught in two 3-week modules.
  • Collaborate with program staff to provide an interdisciplinary educational experience.
  • Provide superior instruction and project/activity based learning experiences for high school students.
  • Provide student supervision and support during summer events, cultural/experiential field trips, and college visits.
  • Attend and participate in 2-3 weekly AI meetings, facilitated by the Curriculum Specialist.
  • Use Google Classroom and Google Suites for classroom instruction, attendance, student communication and other project-based-activities.
  • Collaborate with the summer Curriculum Specialist, to write, edit and present student awards.
  • Assist in transporting students during summer programming if necessary. Summer Program vans will be used for student transportation.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of Summer Banquet/Ball and Family Day presentations
  • Complete all necessary program paperwork and documentation and return it by the conclusion of the summer program.

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
