POSITION SUMMARY: The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates the nursing care for assigned patients. Utilizing the nursing process, the Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements and evaluates, in collaboration with the patient, family and other health team members, the nursing care for assigned patients, demonstrating clinical competency and maintaining standards of professional nursing.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

Valid RN license. Diploma, ADN/ASN, BSN or MSN.

Performs all duties and assumes staff nurse responsibilities while providing patient care. Collects, documents and analyzes the patient’s current health status and medical history. Completes admission assessment.

Formulates and initiates plan of care based on patient needs. Establishes priority of care based on physical, developmental, and psychological needs. Initiates nursing interventions based on relevant data collection. Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of interventions and modifies the plan of care and expected outcomes as appropriate. Applies these principles while monitoring patient condition and while providing pain management and other interventions that would be appropriate.

Appropriately assesses patient/family learning needs. Provides teaching materials and properly documents when teaching has been initiated, reinforced, and completed. Demonstrates age appropriate medication administration while using two unique patient identifiers. Documents medication administration accurately, including its effectiveness when appropriate. Scans patient and medication barcodes in Meditech 85% (% is JMH standard) of the time on units that use BMV as applicable.

Facilitates problem solving and conflict resolution between staff, physicians and departments. Makes effective decisions to resolve clinical and interpersonal problems. Uses tactful communications in sensitive and/or emotionally charged situations.

Follows up with supervisor regarding any reported complaints, conflicts, or concerns. Promotes positive public relations with patients, staff, visitors and physicians. Remains productive when stressed.

Communicates in a clear and concise manner with hospital staff and patients, families and visitors. Accurately describes the clinical situation and elicits input from staff on a consistent basis. Shares reliable, concise, relevant information in a timely manner to staff, patient and co-workers.

Uses written, verbal and electronic communication for maximizing comprehensive information exchange. Practices active and receptive listening skills to ensure productive results.



8.


Attends in-services, department, and other hospital meetings. Meet department standard. Accepts and uses constructive criticism to improve personnel performance. Assumes responsibility for own behaviors and actions. Seeks to add to knowledge and skills and assumes responsibility for professional development.

Quickly learns, implements, and mentors change as it relates to the use of new equipment, procedures, and technology that improves patient care at WVUH-East. Responds well to change. Actively assists fellow staff and management in preparation for all credentialing and licensing surveys (TJC, Medicare, etc.).

Assists the hospital with meeting all Core Measure goals. Including but not limited to: PI and Quality Blue Initiatives. Assists the hospital with meeting all Press Ganey, Patient Satisfaction goals.

Informs the patient of rights and responsibilities. Understands and complies with inter and Intra-facility transfer guidelines. Implements safety procedures for each patient in accordance with the patient’s safety needs. Maintains a clean and safe environment for all.

Complies with Appropriate safety standards: Narcotic counts, Incident reports, Equipment failures, Crash cart checks, Medication security. Identifies proper PPE for use in airborne, droplet, contact, and standard precautions.

Collects and transports specimens in approved containers, according to laboratory specifications. Labels all specimens correctly in the presence of the patient when appropriate. Routinely follows universal precautions in all aspects of patient care, including before invasive procedures are performed.

Takes accountability / responsibility for the correct and documented use of health care resources on the nursing floor.

Exercises proper stewardship through the appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and time. Consistently documents to ensure that supplies and medications are accurately charged.

Performs other duties as assigned which support the mission and values of the organization

Willingly accepts assignments within scope of practice, skill set and level of competence.

Able to wear latex or vinyl gloves, with frequent changes and hand washing. Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Cap; Gown; Mask; Eye cover; Gloves; Waterproof Shoe covers, prn; Lead Apron, prn; Laser Glasses, prn.



2.


Communicate verbally, written and electronically with healthcare personnel, families and patients. Must be flexible and work other than the normal shift when needed and able to take call. May be required to leave work early or asked to work overtime as deemed by the work load.

Must be proficient in the use of assorted equipment supplies and techniques associated with the delivery of patient care

May be required to travel between facilities/buildings. May be exposed to virus, disease, and infection from patients and specimens in working environment. May be exposed to traumatic situations including psychiatric crisis, physical injuries and death.

Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly). Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift. Able to ambulate, position, turn and pull up self-assisting adult patients.

While performing duties of this job the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk or electrical shock, risk of radiation and infectious/blood borne diseases. This job may be fast pace.



SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



1.


Use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse and be able to use and apply hospital software programs.



2.


Answer telephones and transcribe messages and use patient call system.



3.


Must have or acquire the ability to operate patient care equipment.
