Responsibilities
W. R. Berkley has exciting opportunities Trainees to join our exceptional organization! The Trainee role is a developmental opportunity designed to provide talented recent college graduates guided entrance into the intricate world of insurance typically in one area of functional specialization (claims, underwriting, loss control, actuarial, technology or other functional areas). Trainee orientation and progams vary but typically inlcude a combination of courses, independent study and working side by side with experienced colleagues, supervisors, managers and leaders. Key functions may include but not be limited to:
- Develop broad knowledge of the insurance business, marketplace, company goals, objectives, and metrics.
- Demonstrate broad understanding of company operations, strategies, financials, and competitive advantages.
- Demonstrate forms and coverage knowledge and applies them to exposures.
- Compare company coverage to competitors and identify differences and position them effectively.
- Articulate company service capabilities and position to meet specific customer needs.
- Perform detailed analysis utilizing appropriate information to determine account acceptability or while taking customer needs into consideration.
- Negotiate coverage, terms, conditions, and pricing or claims settlements.
- Develop successful relationships with customers and potential customers.
- Make decisions within authority and refers risks outside of established authority.
- Occasional participation in projects and initiatives lead by other departments and/or W. R. Berkley companies, including audits, workshops, focus groups, task forces, etc.
- Attends internal and external seminars and other training events and provides feedback to peers and/or members of management.

Qualifications
- BA/BS degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business, or related fields of study
- A strong academic record and passion for building a career in the insurance industry
- Gamma Iota Sigma membership or involvement highly desireable
- Strong working knowledge in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Strong analytical and reasoning ability, including defining and solving problems, drawing conclusions, interpreting data, and making connections
- Self-motivation and an out-going orientation to work with customers and associates
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, your communication style is flexible to the situation, you communicate clearly and with a purpose
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Calm under pressure, you have excellent organizational skills, integrity, and great follow-through on tasks
- Natural curiosity, you love learning how things work and you are always looking for innovative improvements
- You are open minded, looking for the best result, you treat team members with respect and value their contributions, you are inclusive and committed to working together to achieve common goals
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results by setting goals, prioritizing tasks and staying accountable to stakeholders
