Responsibilities
We have an opportunity for an Underwriter to join our Berkley Asset Protection team! You will be responsible for all underwriting functions associated with personal jewelry risks for our Lavalier.com product. We are open to train as long as you have a background in either: (1) general underwriting (any discipline, any level is ok); (2) no underwriting experience, but you have a jewelry industry background and open to make a transition into the insurance field; or (3) we will also consider candidates with an insurance claims background.
This position can be based in our offices in either: West Hartford, CT; New York, NY (Manhattan); or Appleton, WI

Key functions include but are not limited to:
- Manage book of business as it grows ensuring high quality and profitability
- Review and approve new business, endorsements, and renewals that fall within underwriting authority and company guidelines; refer risks that fall outside authority or guidelines
- Gather necessary information about applicants, analyze risk factors and determine coverage eligibility
- Review and make underwriting decisions on all referral applications
- Prepare declination and non-renewal correspondence to insured, when regulatory required
- Analyze areas of the business that have a high loss ratio and take action to improve results
- Follow jewelry market trends relating to the value of jewelry or potential losses
- Build relationships with partner jewelers and independent agents
- Other tasks, work, and projects as assigned by manager
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
- 2 years of either: underwriting, jewelry, or claims experience
- Takes initiative, works independently, collaborates successfully as part of a team and with employees at all levels in a fast-paced environment
- Strong oral and written communication skills and etiquette, displaying a positive attitude
- Proven ability to develop strong working knowledge of systems and processes
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and Outlook, and other related programs
- Property/Casualty Insurance Agents License – candidate must possess this license or obtain it within four (4) months of hire date; candidate must complete subsequent continuing education requirements.
