What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation Engineer III position at Bernier Carr & Associates?
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
SUPERVISES: TE I and TE II and Student Interns
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs engineering roles and responsibilities as needed in supporting project completeness and timeliness of projects.
- Manages the process and preparation of construction drawings, calculations, applications, and other documents as required to gain approval from regulatory agencies and project owners in a timely manner.
- Serves as project manager on select projects by assigning and reviewing project work to level I and II engineers.
- Assists in the development of Level I and level II engineers.
- Assist in review and preparation of construction plans and specifications.
- Produces and/or reviews preparation of required engineering reports and construction documents by following developed agency standards and developing construction specifications, plans, and schedules.
- Serves as a primary point of contact on client communication, answering and providing high level technical assistance.
- Assists Director of Transportation and/or Principal in Charge with client contact to ensure total client satisfaction.
- Assist Civil department with marketing and business development.
- Responsible for working effectively with internal departments to drive firm’s strategic initiatives.
Supervisory Duties:
- Oversees and manages Transportation Engineer I and II and student interns.
- Recruits, hires and trains staff.
- Evaluates employee performance and recommends or initiates promotions, transfers and disciplinary action.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Stay abreast of industry technology and developments including knowledge of local codes.
- Accomplishes all other duties and tasks as appropriately assigned or requested.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- PE Licensure with 8 years of experience in the field of engineering. Preferably within the Transportation industry.
- 2 years of supervisory experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
- AutoCAD and/or Microstation preferred.
- Civil 3D and/or InRoads preferred.
- Ability to translate client ideas into visual and/or tangible references such as drawings or models.
- Team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn from higher level engineers along with providing mentorship to junior engineers.
- Excellent verbal and written skills, including ability to present to others in small and large group formats.
- Excellent project management skills, with ability to multi-task and handle competing priorities effectively, while delivering quality work on time.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, with a priority on cost effectiveness and client satisfaction.

- Occasionally walk on uneven terrain at construction sites, etc.
