NOTE: If not yet certified in medical billing, the employee may be paid at a grade 5 until certification is attained. Certification must be attained within 6 months of hire.

Job Title- Patient Billing Specialist
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Clinical and Community Health Services Manager, performs duties associated with patient billing for clinical services including but not limited to directly billing, following up on errors, rejections, and denials, working with internal staff and external entities to ensure an efficient and effective billing process, and completing reconciliation of payments to client accounts and County financial system.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
1. Prepares and submits patient billing for clinical services to all payers, including but not limited to: Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance companies, or State agencies.
2. Records and reconciles payments received for clinical services using electronic billing applications and finance applications.
3. Receives and processes payments for BCHD Clinical services received from clinics and state payments.
4. Communicates with outside entities performing billing; manages records of all billing issues and is responsible for follow-up.
5. Resolves all billing problems including errors, rejections and denials using coordinated efforts with internal staff, public and private insurance companies, and outside entities working in billing.
6. Provides ongoing training and quality improvement interventions with clinical staff
(providers and clerical staff) to resolve and prevent problems associated with billing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: A High School diploma or equivalent; and
Experience: A minimum of two years in medical billing experience. Experience in the program area assigned is preferable.
OR
Education: Associates degree in medical billing or related field; and
Experience: None.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license and a vehicle is required.
In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.
Certification in medical billing from AAPC, AHIMA, or equivalent
