What are the responsibilities and job description for the Epidemiologist position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
Monitors population health in Berrien County using a variety of data sources, including real-time healthcare system data.
Coordinates all communicable disease investigative, prevention, control and assessment activities in the health department.
Manages disease surveillance systems and conducts outbreak investigations.
Produces and disseminates investigation results; interprets these data for the community.
Contributes to the conception, development and implementation of public health interventions.
Leads the department’s Infectious Disease Surveillance Committee.
Coordinates a Community Health Assessment process that is inclusive of relevant community partners and meets PHAB accreditation guidelines.
Oversees Berrien County Behavioral Risk Factor Survey (BRFS); analyzes all local BRFS and health datasets.
Develops, implements, and/or coordinates relevant public health interventions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master of Public Health degree with a major in epidemiology;
OR
Master’s degree in a public health field with a minimum of 12 combined graduate level term hours or 8 semester hours in epidemiology and biostatistics courses.
One year of experience working in a public health agency in communicable disease and/or epidemiology is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid vehicle operator’s license and vehicle are required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Strong quantitative reasoning and data analysis skills.
Competency in SAS or SPSS analytical software and Microsoft Office.
Familiarity using data as part of public health decision-making and strategic planning.
Ability to combine health information and data from various sources into a snapshot of a particular population’s health and communicate to stakeholders.
Thorough understanding of health equity and social determinants of health.
Knowledge and/or experience in public health intervention planning, evaluation and emergency preparedness.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated decision-making ability, problem solving skills, and capacity for leadership.
