The District Cogen Superintendent is responsible for providing leadership and oversight to the district's cogeneration facilities, managing the entire operational life cycle, from planning and implementation to maintenance and optimization. In this role, the District Cogen Superintendent collaborates with various stakeholders, including engineers, operations managers, maintenance teams, legal, accounting, environmental, permitting, supply chain, and external service providers, to develop comprehensive plans, establish timetables, and ensure efficient and effective operation of cogeneration facilities. The District Cogen Superintendent is responsible for meeting performance, safety, and environmental standards, while exhibiting the organization's core values of Stronger Together, Own it, Breed Excellence, Do the Right Thing, and Responsible.

Key Accountabilities

  • Directs a team to manage multiple cogeneration facilities simultaneously.
  • Work directly with gas and electricity contract administrators
  • Coordinates operations with power grid schedulers
  • Interfaces with interoffice managers, communicating updates and forecasts.
  • Prepares development plans and cost estimates for facility upgrades or expansions.
  • Ensures quality and performance standards are met within assigned timeframes.
  • Coordinates, manages, and monitors the workings of all cogeneration facility staff.
  • Participates in pre-operation planning, including facility assessments, layout, and project details.
  • Communicates and resolves operational conflicts with vendors or operations managers.
  • Monitors and improves processes and policies within the cogeneration facilities.
  • Formulates and implements operational procedures.
  • Oversees cogeneration facilities from commissioning to ongoing operation.
  • Ensures all rules and regulations are being followed.
  • Implements and manages operational plans to optimize efficiency.
  • Reviews performance metrics and addresses any deviations from standards.
  • Oversees maintenance activities and schedules for cogeneration facilities.
  • Assists with the development of performance standards and ensures their implementation.
  • Reviews and approves maintenance cost estimates.
  • Manages procurement, receipt, transfer, storage, preservation, and disposal of equipment and materials.
  • Leads complex studies on facility upgrades or improvements.
  • Ensures that staffing levels are appropriate for planned maintenance work.
  • Oversees contractor qualification, selection, performance, and administration.
  • Balances performance, schedule, and quality to achieve successful operational outcomes.
  • Tracks and reports progress and estimated/actual costs for all planned and active projects.
  • Identifies and coordinates resolution of technical and operational problems.
  • Coordinates proper testing and commissioning of all facilities with engineering and production staff.
  • Ensures that all required documentation, including operational logs and reports, is prepared accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with both the operational and HSE teams to meet area and departmental HSE goals effectively.  
  • Complies with all Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies, practices, and programs of the Company, and actively collaborates with the operational and HSE teams to promote and provide a safe work environment.
  • Participates in and adheres to all training programs designed to enhance HSE knowledge, safety standards, and improve job performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Certificates, Licenses

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related science preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in power plant operations or management (e.g., Certified Energy Manager) preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record required.

 

Experience

  • 10 years of cogen experience
  •  3 years supervisory experience.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to lead others effectively.
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills.
  • Successfully manage complex and cross-functioning operations.
  • Experience working in the power generation or energy industry.

Required:

  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of cogeneration facilities. Communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to be punctual and reliable.
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office products.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and excellent analytical skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task.
  • Knowledge of cogeneration plant operations, equipment, and systems.
  • Experience with maintenance and optimization of power generation facilities.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.

 Desired:

  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.

 

Work Environment

This role works primarily in a non-office environment. In this capacity, incumbents are regularly:

  • Exposed to outdoor elements such as extreme heat or cold, heavy winds, rain, or snow.
  • Exposed to loud noise level elements
  • Required to drive to and access job sites, in light of day as well as in darkness, to perform work assignments. Some job site locations may be remote from the office requiring long drives to locations isolated from interaction with others and towns.
  • Required to balance, bend, squat, crouch, climb, reach, grasp, stoop, kneel, push/pull and lift objects, and use apparatus to push/pull and lift heavy objects weighing 50 lbs or more.
  • Subject to exposure to hazards such as but not limited to slippery or uneven surfaces; environmental/industry hazards such as chemicals, high-decibel noise from production equipment, fumes, or poor ventilation; proximity to moving objects and vehicles; potentially combustible components; hazardous off- road conditions such as dust, ice, and snow.
  • May be requested to work long hours to complete job assignments.
  • May work a rotating schedule, shift, and/or be on call.
  • Follow all company safety policies and protocols.
  • Required to perform active, physical tasks including but not limited to operating equipment and/or machinery and making adjustments and repairs.
  • Required to have visual acuity to work with parts, equipment, apparatus, etc.
  • Required to possess audible acuity to hear alarms in the event of emergency. field locations.

Compensation and Benefits

The pay range for this position in California is between $156,000-$214,500 annually based on a full-time schedule.  Please note that the annual salary information is a general guideline, and that annual salary will vary depending on your location and that Berry Corporation (“Berry”) will consider factors such as (but not limited to) scope of responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considers when extending an offer.  This position is eligible for short-term cash incentive bonus and long-term incentive awarded in restricted share units, excellent benefits including full health benefits, 401(k) with company match and immediate vesting, tuition reimbursement, 9/80 flex schedules, and generous paid time off.
