Purpose of Your Position:
24 hour authority to plan, organize and develop the overall operation of your assigned nursing unit in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Director of Nursing Services, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
Delegation of Authority:
As Nurse Manager, you are delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your duties.

Administrative Functions:
1. Assists DNS to plan, lead, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the assigned unit of the Nursing Services Department, as well as its programs and activities in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern the long-term facility.
2. Assures compliance with the policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the Nursing Services Department.
3. Ensures that the Nursing Services Procedures Manual and nursing service objectives and philosophies are current at all times.
4. Assist the DNS to develop, maintain and periodically update written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
5. Maintain effective communication with residents, families, community services, medical and educational facilities, regulatory agencies and consultant services.
6. Collaborates and coordinates with other Nurse Managers to ensure consistency of nursing activities throughout the facility.
7. Assure that a reference of library of written nursing material (i.e., PDR’s, Federal and State Regulations, etc.) that will assist the Nursing Services Department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the residents is maintained current at the nurse stations.
8. Assist the DNS to develop, implement and maintain an ongoing quality assurance program for the Nursing Services Department.
9. Acts as a liaison between the resident, family and physician.
10. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
11. Complete medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as required.
12. Participate in survey inspections made by authorized government agencies.
13. Interprets the department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors and government agencies as required.
14. Meet with your staff on each assigned unit at least monthly to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or the improvement of services.
15. Review resident’s plan of care at least quarterly and/or change the care plan if a significant change in resident’s condition.
16. If appropriate, quarterly training to review the necessity for following resident care plans will be conducted.
Personnel/Staff Development Functions:
1. Reviews and evaluates unit’s work force and makes recommendations to the DNS.
2. Participate in determining staffing requirements, employee performance evaluations and make recommendations to the DNS concerning employee dismissals, transfers, etc.
3. Ensure that a sufficient number of nursing staff are available for your units to ensure that routine nursing care is provided to meet the daily nursing care needs of each resident.
4. Make daily rounds of the unit to ensure that all nursing service personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
5. Review complaints and grievances made or filed by the department personnel. Make appropriate reports to the DNS as required or as may be necessary.
6. Attend and participate in continuing educational programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in your profession, as well as to maintain your license on a current status.
7. Maintain an excellent working relationship with other department supervisors and coordinate with the nursing services program to assure quality and comprehensive care.
8. Ensure that disciplinary action is administered fairly and without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap or marital status.
9. Maintain, teach, organize and assist in an effective orientation program for new employees on the unit.
10. Perform counseling and disciplinary activities per facility policy, making recommendations to the DNS concerning employee disciplinary action, transfers, and dismissals.
11. Ensure that employees assigned to your units receive a ninety-day and annual evaluation.
12. Assist in resident dining service.
Resident Care Function:
1. Monitors Medication/Treatment grid and procedures to assure correct procedures are being followed.
2. Ensures that physician orders are carried out efficiently, and assures clear communication with the physician.
3. Formulates, plans, assists and develops interdisciplinary care conferences.
4. Ensures residents minimum data seta are assessed and updated timely.
5. Reviews care plans to assure appropriate care has been rendered.
6. Maintains quality control of all SOAP charting, admissions, discharges, transfers, care plan conferences, care plans, accident/incident reports and all other pertinent documentation.
7. Accurately assess the resident in the admission process, serving on the Admission Committee, attending scheduled meetings with the Admissions Director and performing pre-admission assessments.
8. Assures proper maintenance of clinical records of residents.
9. Ensures all investigations on all occurrences are thorough and timely and action plans are carried out.
10. Provides direct nursing care as necessary.
Safety and Sanitation Functions:
1. Monitors nursing personnel to assure that they are following established safety regulation in the use of equipment and supplies.
2. Ensures that all nursing services personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress codes.
3. Assures that all nursing services personnel follow standard precautions and correct gloving techniques as per facility infection control policy.
4. Ensures residents minimum data seta are assessed and updated timely.
5. Follow all established safety procedures in performing all duties.
6. Assist the DNS and/or ADNS in identifying, evaluating and classifying routine and job-related functions to ensure that tasks in which potential exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified and recorded.
Qualifications
- Must possess, at a minimum, a Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Must be currently licensed in the State of Washington.
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
- Must be able to function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies.
- Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
- Must have at least one (1) year experience in supervisory/management role.
- Must have leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
- Must be flexible with hours and cover all 3 shifts, if necessary.
