Bethel School District is seeking candidates for a 1.0 FTE Construction/Woodshop CTE Teacher at Kalapuya High School. The Construction/Woodshop CTE Teacher will be responsible for development, implementation, and instruction in the Kalapuya YouthBuild CTE Construction Program. Under the guidance of a CTE Construction Teacher, students will work with community partners to construct tiny homes in the Kalapuya woodshop and site-built construction projects in the community.
Candidates who have real world industry experience are encouraged to apply for this position. A teaching license is not a requirement for applying. Bethel School District will work with individuals to earn their CTE Teaching license without a traditional educational program.

The Kalapuya YouthBuild Career & Technical Education (CTE) program at Kalapuya High School introduces and trains students in multiple high-wage trade pathways (framing, construction, plumbing, electrical, sheet metal, etc.) and advanced degree professions relating to construction and low-income housing development (architecture, engineering, land use planning, non-profit management).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned):
- Teach ‘Introduction to Construction’ course to small cohort of high school students, creating meaningful relationships, relevant experiences and engaging lessons to inspire students to learn about the construction trades and housing agencies.
- Teaches occupational knowledge and skills in areas such as safety, communication, construction materials, trades, and career preparation
- Track student progress and provide regular and timely feedback to all students.
- Communicate regularly with students, parents, and other staff regarding students' successes and challenges.
- Confer with colleagues, administration, students and/or parents when necessary
- Ensure that students are adequately knowledgeable and trained in shop tool and workplace/OSHA safety standards
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities, provides appropriate safety instructions and makes safety checks on equipment and work areas to ensure the overall safety of students
- Work with students and community partners to design and build tiny homes in the Kalapuya Woodshop
- Adequately plan for and obtain supplies and materials to complete construction projects
- Work with local trade unions, Lane Community College, and local business partners to introduce students to viable trade career pathways.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with local nonprofit community organizations to build and deliver tiny homes
- Work collaboratively to develop CTE pathways in construction technology
- Teaches occupational knowledge and skills in areas such as safety, communication, construction materials, trades, and career preparation
- Matches activities and materials to individual group skills and needs
- Selects and requisitions required instructional equipment, supplies and materials
- Ensures that materials and equipment are properly used, maintained and stored, and that inventory records are accurate and current
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities, provides appropriate safety instructions and makes safety checks on equipment and work areas to ensure the overall safety of students
- Evaluate each student’s growth periodically and develop instructional plans for the future assist the specialists in the instruction of special education students
- Confer with colleagues, administration, students and/or parents when necessary

Qualifications:
- Valid Oregon CTE teaching license (or ability to obtain one)
- Ability to work and communicate with students, teachers parents and administrators
- Ability to work in a meaningful way with an experienced team of instructors
- Ability to work collaboratively with local industry and post-secondary partners
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with student, staff and/or parent information
- Experience in the construction/wood industry
- Experience teaching construction and/or woods at the secondary level (or similar experiences)
Selection Factors:
- Knowledge of educational programs offered in all schools and of basic educational techniques, as required by the position.
- Knowledge of the basic developmental stages of a child's learning process.
- Ability to schedule the workload, manage time, and meet the needs of students, the school, or a program.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work with small groups and individual students.
- Ability to prepare materials for lesson plans and adapt, as needed, to meet the needs of students.
- Ability to interact positively with children and adults and observe individual student abilities.
- Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, administrators, parents and co-workers.
- Ability to safely and proficiently operate standard office and audio-visual equipment, as required by the position.
- Ability to maintain an appropriate and legal level of confidentiality regarding students, staff, and other individuals.
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable and prompt attendance.
Minimum qualifications:
- Possess an Oregon Teaching License valid for assignment by start of the school year
- Ability to implement Culturally Proficient skills and strategies
- Successfully pass fingerprinting, criminal, Oregon Department of Education, and TSPC background checks
- New staff must be fully vaccinated to meet the COVID-19 vaccine mandate or have an approved exception
Highly desirable qualifications:
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities, preferably Spanish/English
- Experience working in richly diverse school communities and environments
