POSITION: Deputy Sheriff
LOCATION: Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office
SALARY: $26.43 per hour plus benefits; Union Bargaining Unit position
DUTY HOURS: Rotating Shifts
MAJOR DUTIES: Enforcement of penal, traffic, and game laws, and the detection and prevention of crime.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Be a citizen of the United States, per Montana Code Annotated 7-32-303 (2)(a); 2. Be at least 18 years of age, per Montana Code Annotated 7-32-303 (2)(b) ; 3. Be fingerprinted and a search made of the local, state, and national files to disclose any criminal records; 4. Have not been convicted of a crime for which the applicant could have been imprisoned in a federal or state penitentiary; 5. Be of good moral character, as determined by a background investigation conducted by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office; 6. Be a high school graduate or equivalent; 7. Be examined by a licensed physician who is not the applicant’s personal physician, appointed by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office, to determine if the applicant is free from any mental or physical condition that might adversely affect the applicant’s performance as a peace officer; 8. Pass an oral interview conducted by the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office; 9. Possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver license and must be an insurable driver; 10. The selected applicant must attend and successfully complete, within one (1) year of the initial appointment, the basic certification course conducted by the Montana Department of Justice, Law Enforcement Academy in Helena, Montana; 11. A peace officer under the provisions of 7-32-303, M.C.A., who has been issued a basic certificate by the Montana public safety officer standards and training council and whose last date of employment as a peace officer was less than 36 months prior to the date of the person’s present appointment as a peace officer, is not required to fulfill the basic educational requirement; 12. If the applicant fails to successfully complete the basic certification course, he/she will forfeit the position, authority, and arrest powers accorded a peace officer in this state; 13. WRITTEN & PHYSICAL TESTING OF APPLICANTS: ENTRY LEVEL APPLICANTS – No entry-level applicant will be hired unless they have passed the written/physical testing process. LATERAL APPLICANTS – Lateral officers will also be required to complete the above written and physical testing. A lateral applicant is considered any current or former peace officer who has been P.O.S.T. Basic certified (or equivalent), within the last three (3) years of separation from any agency.
