What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Editor position at Big Think?

What You’ll Do

  • Edit - Your primary job is to commission and copy edit articles from freelancers and staff writers on the topic of business. (We define “business” broadly to include not just economics and finance but business strategy, workplace psychology, leadership, management, career self-improvement, etc.)
  • Research - Another duty is to identify stories that should be written and to assign them to freelancers and staff writers.
  • Recruit - We have a team of freelance writers. Part of your job will be to identify new freelance writers who specialize in business.
  • Write - Users come to Big Think to watch captivating videos and read smart articles. You will help write some of those smart articles.
  • Collaborate - The editorial team doesn’t operate in a vacuum. Success is truly a company-wide effort. So part of the job involves collaborating with our talented colleagues — video producers, publishers, and social media experts.
  • Assist - Your job also will include performing other related duties assigned by the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor.

What You’ll Need

  • 10 years of experience in business journalism with an ability to cover a wide range of topics
  • Preferably an academic background in business, economics, or a related field
  • Extreme, almost obsessive attention to detail
  • Flexibility (this is not a typical 9-to-5 job)
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, quickly growing startup and learn quickly
  • Unparalleled verbal and especially written communication skills
  • Love of our type of journalism — intelligent, thought-provoking, often uplifting, and the exact opposite of the cynicism and partisanship that drives mainstream media outlets

What You’ll Get Out Of this Opportunity

  • Collaborative culture and mentorship in a startup environment
  • The privilege of learning about the smartest ideas from the smartest people in the world
  • Growth opportunities within a fast-growing company
  • Competitive salary and benefits including: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, and Disability Insurance, 401(k), Commuter Benefits, Mobile Phone Stipend, and more!
