Job Description:


Budget Title: Senior Staff Associate (SL-5)


Salary: $80,000 - $90,000


The director of student transition and success, under the direction of the assistant vice president for student success within the Division of Student Affairs, will lead the day-to-day operations of the Office for Student Transition and Success (STS). The director will be in charge of, and provide oversight to, Success Coaching, First Year Experience/UNIV101, Emerging Leaders Program, Transfer Student Success, Binghamton Advantage Program and the Speaking Center. The director will maintain responsibility for the development, management and direction of these units, and also be student-facing for success coaching appointments. The director will work closely with the AVP to build close collaborations with campus partners across divisions, including University Tutorial Services, Academic Affairs and advising offices, financial aid, Admissions, New Student Programs, and others. The director will use data-driven decision-making, have a strengths-based approach to student success, and facilitate collaborations across campus designed to provide programs and services that proactively empower students to succeed and support the University's student success goals of retention, graduation, participation in high-impact practices, career outcomes, and wellbeing. The director will also help support the assistant vice president for student success in related work as needed.


Responsibilities:


  • Provides leadership to a collaborative campus-wide culture for student success. Specifically, provides oversight, leadership and overall day-to-day oversight for all units within the office of Student Transition and Success, Success Coaching, First Year Experience/UNIV101, Emerging Leaders, Transfer Student Services, Binghamton Advantage Program, and the Speaking Center.
  • Works cooperatively with colleges and departments on programs that support undergraduate student transition and success, including University Tutorial Services, Academic Affairs and academic advising offices, financial aid, Admissions, New Student Programs, and others.
  • Serves as a point of contact and provides success coaching on a walk-in or appointment basis and makes referrals to appropriate campus resources, school advising offices, academic departments, career center, CARE Team, and other resources as necessary, and provides relevant presentations to students.
  • Stays abreast of developments in the field of student persistence and academic success.
  • Develops, oversees and assesses programs and services that are informed by best practices in higher education to improve retention and graduation rates and empower undergraduates to succeed academically.
  • Supports student success (retention, graduation, participation in high-impact practices, career outcomes, wellbeing).
  • Oversees assessment, continuous improvement, technology and accountability initiatives for the office.
  • Oversees communications, promotions and public relations related to the Office for Student Transition and Success programing and other appropriate University initiatives.
  • Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates direct reports, and approves all departmental personnel actions.
  • Facilitates professional development opportunities for staff members.
  • Provides effective budget management and oversees fiscal operations of the office.
  • Serves on University committees as appropriate.
  • Presents to students through STS programs, classroom and department opportunities, and student organizations.
  • Assists the assistant vice president for student success with occasional projects.
  • Participates in a duty rotation for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Occasional evening, night or weekend work required.


Requirements:

  • Knowledgeable of, and practitioner of, best practices in success coaching, analytics, programming for new students, leadership programs, programs to develop speaking skills, first-year seminars and transfer student programming
  • Master's degree and 5-7 years of progressively responsible experience, including staff supervision/management
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, including public speaking
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Effective project management and analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge academic and student affairs partnerships
  • Ability to negotiate and bring differences to successful resolution
  • Strong marketing skills
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to attract, motivate, coach and develop a team and foster a diverse and inclusive work environment

Preferred:


  • Management experience in college student or academic affairs to include program development, evaluation and staff supervision; demonstrated experience in meeting the needs of college students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students; experience within the areas of student transition, especially First Year Experience curriculum, success coaching, leadership programs and/or transfer student services
  • Analytics and data-driven decision-making
  • First Year Experience curriculum and programming
  • Success coaching experience and general understanding of academic advising
