Biomedical Equipment Technician, Levels 1-3:

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

With some supervision will perform safety checks of hospital equipment and power sources, performs routine and indepth service and repairs on the equipment assigned. Optimize the safety, effectiveness, efficiency and economy of diagnostic, therapeutic and supporting equipment used for patient care by routine, periodic inspections, PM and calibration of the equipment. Will repair, calibrate, and perform preventive maintenance on medical equipment.Perform safety checks and document all tasks to insure compliance with all local and federal guidelines.

MAJOR DUTIES, PROCEDURES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to maintain equipment documentation, react quickly and calmly in emergencies, install, repair, maintain a variety of medical equipment, read and interrupt circuit diagrams, express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform duties with some supervision and guidance from senior or specialist staff.
  • Has a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Subject to background search, motor vehicle records check, and drug screening before hire.
  • Utilitizes standard and advanced electronics test equipment, and repair manuals to perform all maintenance and repairs on biomed equipment.
  • Has the ability to work with the departments senior and specialist staff, to work on equipment and systems with some guidance from senior or specialist either in person to ensure timely preventative maintenance or repairs on the equipment and systems in question.
  • Maintain all history logs and records on the equipment in question.
  • As time and duties allow, will assist others within the department to complete their tasks and duties in a timely manner, be it the work of another BMET specialist, or that of an ET, or a

BMET I as directed by the Clinical Engineering Services Manager.

  • Order parts as needed, following departmental policy.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Familiar with the biomedical maintenance field and its concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and ability to interpret technical diagrams and schematics for a variety of devices.
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology and understanding of basic anatomy and physiology related to functions of biomedical equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical safety.
  • Knowledge of the use of electrical and medical test equipment, digital and electronic troubleshooting.
  • Basic soldering skills.
  • Current knowledge of Joint Commission standards, other regulations, healthcare safety protocols, etc.
  • Data entry and computer software experience. PC software proficiency (MS Outlook, Word,

Excel preferred). Data input to appropriate equipment management software.

  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English. Good English language skills are required to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external staff
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Experience in dealing with clients and/or customer service.

WORKING CONDITITONS/PHYSICAL HAZARDS

  • May be required to lift weights and carry equipment. Up to 50 pounds several time per day unassisted.
  • May be exposed to disagreeable environmental conditions including dirt, infectious diseases, noise, heights, cramped working spaces and areas/tasks where caution must be exercised to ensure safety, many times on a daily bases. Examples: 1) attic crawls due to equipment cable, 2) repairing of suction equipment. 3) having to work in tight areas due to cabinets.
  • May be exposed to hot water and steam, due to Autoclave and sterilizer repair and service, several times a week.
  • May be exposed to electrical, mechanical hazards, several times per hour while repairing and servicing biomedical equipment.
  • May be exposed to chemical, and radiation hazards. Several times a year when working on

Radiology equipment, Medical Gas systems and Chemical sterilizers.

  • May be exposed to chemical and chemical cleaners daily. Soap, staffing agents, glues and lubricates.
  • May be required to work flexible hours.
  • May be required to travel between hospital sites and clinics to complete duties

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.00 - $32.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

Experience:

  • Biomedical Field Service or CBET certification: 2 years (Required)
