Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head of Engineering and Technology will will be the leader Biscom’s engineering and development teams. You will own the execution of the product roadmap, working hand-in-hand with the Head of Product. You will lead the transformation of both the team and the product architecture taking the Biscom platform to the cloud. This role is critical to the successful growth of the company.
Objectives – The Problems You’ll Solve
Objective #1: In your first 3 months, assess the engineering team – processes, tooling, development style, and talent.
- Work closely with the CEO, Executive Team, ParkerGale partner, and engineering team to quickly ramp up on key elements of the product strategy.
- Review the current DevOps process (QA, deployment, release management, etc.) and build a roadmap, creating a plan to get us from current state to desired state.
- Evaluate current team and identify any needs / gaps.
- Ensure lines of communication are clear between the various stakeholders and that adjustments are made in a collaborative way.
Objective #2:In your first 6 months, stand up key engineering processes and systems.
- Create an engineering prioritization process which blends bug fix, feature requests, committed customer enhancements, tech debt, and roadmap.
- Implement and estimating and planning process to improve both accuracy and velocity.
- Work hand in hand with the business to rationalize / reduce 88 products to minimize footprint to only the necessary platform features and commercially viable solutions.
- Decide and implement on a modern tooling stack (e.g. – source code control, ticketing, deployment testing)
Objective #3: Within your first 12 months, develop the future cloud architecture for the next generation of the product.
- Work with product management to develop feature sets.
- Choose cloud partner(s) and decide which cloud native components for a replacement for home grown components where applicable.

Competencies – What we’re looking for
Develops predictability in deployment: The VP of Engineering will need to develop a comfortable level of delivery that is aggressive but does not over-promise. Success in this role means clearly articulating what the business can expect on a quarterly basis in conjunction with maintaining a brisk pace of execution while not overextending the engineering team.
Passionate about building teams: The VP of Engineering must be able to hire, on-board, manage, and develop all members of the team. He/she must foster a collaborative and supportive environment that ensures everyone feels safe to share ideas, feedback and resources. This requires a high degree of emotional intelligence, empathy, open communication, and trust-building ability.
Drives solid process but is not overly dogmatic: The VP of Engineering must know, understand, and be able to implement basic agile principles, but should always adapt them to the skills and capabilities of Biscom.
Can sling code but doesn’t have to: When it comes to the technology itself, the VP of Engineering must be able to “talk the talk” in order to be able to ask the right questions and to understand what is really going on underneath the hood. However, success in this role will require he/she to stay out of the weeds whenever possible and focus on setting strategy, providing direction, clearing roadblocks, and developing the team.
