The Communication Technician is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining electronic communication systems in a railway environment. The Communication Technician is a temporary, project based, full time position.
- Install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain electronic communication systems in use on railcars, passenger rail stations, and in communication enclosures located on the railroad right of way.
- Reconfigure and verify networked Access Points, Switches, and Routers to maintain communication integrity.
- Swap and test onboard equipment, including internal components, to ensure optimal performance.
- Reload firmware for the onboard devices to rectify any software and compatibility issues.
- Conduct Wi-Fi analysis and testing through in-service ride-along to optimize connectivity.
- Repair and maintain Antennas and Inter-Chassis Links (ICL) to uphold communication standards.
- Use a laptop, desktop, tablet, or other computer to update trouble tickets with diagnostics, resolution notes, and photos to document field support activities.
- Read diagrams, sketches, operation manuals and manufacturing specifications.
- Perform other duties of the same responsibility requested by the supervisor.
Working Environment
- Temperature variation due to moving between indoor and outdoor work areas.
- Work onboard trains, inside rail yards and shops, buildings.
- Noise from stationery and moving trains, boom trucks, forklifts, generators, power tools and hand tools.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- Associate degree in engineering technology or a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited community college or four-year college or University.
- One year of experience in electronic testing, installation, troubleshooting and maintenance, including documented paid or unpaid relevant work experience at a college or university.
- High proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Visio.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Willingness to travel to different locations, as needed to resolve problems.
- Knowledgeable in the set-up and operation of assigned software diagnostic tools.
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem solving, and analytical skills.
- Ability to learn and apply industry-specific regulations and compliance standards.
- The ability to work any shift including the possibility of working nights, weekends, and/or holidays, and be on call during those times as well.
- The ability to work according to the necessary schedule to meet the job requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Repetitive use of hands, wrists, or fingers to operate office and field equipment.
- Ascending and descending ladders.
- Visual acuity to review and edit written documents for long periods of time.
- Communication with others to exchange information.
- Lifting heavy materials up to 40 pounds.
- Wearing protective footwear, eyewear, hearing protection, face mask and other safety gear.
- Work varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be on call during those times as well.
- Moving between train cars.
- Operating motor vehicles.
Required Certificates, Licenses, and Registration
- Valid Driver's License

Employee must:
- Pass a background check.
- Pass a drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from a trade, vocational, and/ or technical school specializing in electronics and/or communication.
- Associate degree in electronics technology with an emphasis on communication systems.
- Experience reading and understanding wiring diagrams, schematics, written instructions and maintenance and training guides (examples may include operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents).
- OSHA 30 certificate.
- NFPA 70E For Qualified Persons.

Salary : $62,400 - $68,640
