Technical Content Specialist

National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) at National Institutes of Health (NIH). NCBI uses the web to advance science and health by providing free access to biomedical and genomic information, and as a result it is one of the top 400 most visited sites in the world. NCBI is part of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, located in Bethesda, Maryland.

BCC is searching for a Senior MySQL Database Administrator to support the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The Technical Content Specialist will work on a team that supports document- or publications related projects at NCBI including PubMed, PubMed Central, and Bookshelf. General duties will include document modeling, establishing workflows, writing and debugging XSL transforms to the archival XML formats used, and general support of the content processing and programming teams. 

General Qualifications

• Minimum education requirement: Bachelor’s degree.

• Two years experience in a publishing or library science environment.

• Experience with web and online publications, specifically electronic journals or books.

• Has a positive attitude and displays flexibility and patience in interactions with all parties.

Required Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of SGML and/or XML and DTD and other schema languages.

• Ability to solve technical problems by working with a variety of personnel (software

developers, content specialists, authors, editors).

• Demonstrated knowledge of XSLT, XSL2, or OmniMark; experience with conversion

of XML or SGML documents to other data formats.

• Demonstrated knowledge of MathML.

• Excellent analytical and creative thinking skills.

• Excellent organizational skills, meticulous and thorough approach to detail.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• At least two items from the “Desired Skills” list.

Desired Skills

• Experience with XSL3.

• Experience modeling documents in SGML or XML and supporting schemas in DTD, XSD, RNG, RNC.

• Experience with NISO Z39.96-2015 JATS.

• Experience with XSL-FO.

• Experience creating or modifying publication workflows.

• Experience with electronic image formats (TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PNG).

Job Responsibilities

May include:

• Transform and validate XML documents.

• Troubleshoot data conversion issues; coordinate with appropriate personnel

to solve programming and content-related issues.

• Assist in workflow development; development of tools to ensure data integrity.

• Develop a thorough understanding of Journal Article Tag Suite XML format to support

in-house and outside users.
