Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating medium to heavy equipment in a variety of public works construction, maintenance, and repair projects, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Foreman.
Shift:Spring Shift:
[April 1st - September 4th] Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm
Fall Shift:
[September 5th - March 31st] Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.- Operates a variety of medium to heavy equipment such as rollers, backhoe, front-end loader, dump truck, tractors and similar motorized vehicles and small equipment
- Operates backhoe to cut and remove asphalt street sections, sidewalks, or curb and gutter for patch or reconstruction; digs trenches, culverts and loads sand, rocks, etc.
- Assists with paving potholes and repairing utility cuts, raising valves and manhole covers in preparation for resurfacing, constructing curb and gutter and sidewalks, cleaning catch basins and other tasks
- Operates a dump truck to haul gravel, rock and concrete; operates dump trucks with salt spreaders and scrape blades to push snow
- Drives a truck or participates as part of a leaf and/or other yard waste collection crew
- Assists in the fabrication and installation of various street marking signs such as regulatory, warning, work zone and street name signs
- Operates equipment in street and pedestrian traffic, around other ground utilities and in other tight places requiring care and skill
- Washes, cleans, and performs routine servicing such as checking fluid level, tire pressure, changes oil and filters on assigned equipment
- Assists with snow removal and ice control; mixes and spreads salt
- General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities, and limitations of equipment used in area of assignment
- General knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in the operation of equipment
- Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
- Skill in the operation of equipment
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
- Mechanical aptitude
- Ability to detect signs of mechanical failure of equipment
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in the operation of motorized equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
- Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as satisfactory driving record
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 6 months of employment
- This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
- Work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires tasting or smelling
- Work has standard vision requirements
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
- Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
