What are the responsibilities and job description for the Homeless Outreach Associate position at Block by Block?
Identify and assist those in community to provide social services and to find resources to better serve the community of Salt Lake City. Must establish relationships with community services that provide resources and to the vulnerable populations. Services include; government, social service, non-profit and for-profit businesses.
This role serves as the representative of Block by Block, the Business Improvement District and the community. May provide detailed strategies , maintain established budgets or provide suggestions for assisting and guiding those services to better serve the community. This Outreach Specialist works to provide an organized effort to lead the Outreach presence in community. Must be able to cooperate with clients to address issues of socially unacceptable behaviors such as, panhandling, loitering and public intoxication.
IDENTIFY THOSE IN NEED – the unhoused and the areas they gravitate toward. Identify and direct those to services and agencies to meet their daily needs and activity of daily living. Work toward establishing a mutual respect so as to reduce the public perception of nuisance of unhoused individuals. Always advocate for community services if necessary for local resources if none exist.
ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS or MAINTAIN THOSE RELATIONSHIPS – with the city, county, and state agencies that are in place or advocate for more services, if needed in order to respond to the needs of the homeless and neediest of community. Strive toward a cooperative effort to make a positive impact on homelessness in your district.
PATROL THE DISTRICT – locate on foot and reach out to those in need as well as to direct those in public spaces to services or more suitable locations.
OBSERVE AND REPORT – while on patrol be watchful for unwanted behaviors or criminal activity and report to Safety Ambassadors via two-way radios. Must be able to articulate an accurate description of persons, vehicles, and other similar identifiers.
HOSPITALITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE – while on patrol will go out of the way to actively acknowledge pedestrians with a friendly greeting or identify visitors in order to provide directions, information, city information or recommendations.
REPORTING – must be able to provide written reports of daily accomplishments and tasks completed.
PROFESSIONALISM – Must maintain a positive, professional environment in full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures and overall Block by Block standards of expected professionalism.
REQUIREMENTS
· ASSOCIIATES DEGREE OR RELEVANT EXPERIENCE IN:
o Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Sociology or one year of relevant work history.
· PHYSICAL ABILITIES –
o Must have the physical capacity to walk or traverse continuously during an eight hour shift, with normal breaks (two fifteen minutes, and one thirty minute meal break).
o Must be able to work outdoors in all conditions with company provided inclement weather gear.
· COMMUNICATION – Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language and use a computer operating system to document incidences that occur in the field.
