Acoustics and FIV engineer III

As part of a dedicated team of specialists you will be responsible for performing the acoustic analysis and flow induced vibration (FIV) calculations for rocket engine components. You will develop design guidelines and processes for acoustic analysis and champion the development of analytical tools for acoustics and FIV. You will work in a fast-paced environment and provide innovative solutions to challenging physics problems experienced in the demanding environments of rocket engines.

Responsibilities:

• Perform acoustic analysis and flow induced vibration (FIV) calculations for rocket engine components such as combustion chamber, turbomachinery, propellant supply lines, injection system, bellows, heat exchanger etc.
• Develop tools and analytical models for acoustics and FIV calculations
• Develop and improve design guidelines and best practices for acoustic analysis and component FIV
• Work closely with the engine component teams to develop, test and mature designs

Qualifications:

• Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering, preferably mechanical or aerospace
• Excellent physical understanding of rocket engines and related physics
• Strong technical fundamentals in propulsion, fluids, acoustics, and structural dynamics
• Thorough understanding of combustion chamber acoustics, instabilities, effect of damping mechanisms such as baffles and resonators, and structural/feedline coupling
• Experience with Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI), and particularly with Flow Induced Vibration (FIV) problems, numerical simulation methods and digital signal processing
• Ability to work effectively in teams
• Ability to be self-directed and balance several tasks at one time
• Ability to communicate analysis results effectively
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

• 10 years' experience in rocket engine acoustics and flow induced vibration analysis
• Masters' degree or Ph.D. in relevant disciplines
• Experience with cryogenic fluids and rocket engine design
• Familiarity with rocket engine hot fire testing and data collection using instrumentation such as accelerometers, pressure transducers, strain gages, load cells, and microphones.
• Knowledge of ANSYS, NASTRAN, COMSOL, Fluent, CFX
• Familiarity with Creo (Pro/E), Windchill
• Excellent understanding of MATLAB, Python
