What are the responsibilities and job description for the AmeriCorps Member - Home Repairs Program position at Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity?
For over 30 years, Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity has been providing safe, decent and affording housing for Ada County. The BVHFH AmeriCorps program is launching to provide new and holistic services through the Home Repairs program by providing accessibility for homeowners.
Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in Ada County through constructing and repairing homes. We are excited to launch an AmeriCorps program to reach even more individuals who are in need of affordable service. Members will have the opportunity to work with the Construction Manager and the Home Repairs Program Manager to expand their skills while contributing to a purposeful mission. Boise Valley Habitat’s AmeriCorps program is initially focusing on building accessibility ramps for low-income individuals in Ada County. Members will have the opportunity to expand the reach of this program with the intention of providing more services based on the members’ interests. The Program Manager and the member will have the opportunity to plan out current and potential projects to challenge and grow the member’s current abilities and knowledge. There are several areas of focus the members may choose from and combine while serving at Boise Valley Habitat which are: working directly on construction/repair sites, coordinating volunteers, providing homeowner services and building homeowner education materials. Members will be working both independently and with a small team on projects, with opportunities for leadership development throughout their term of service. There are two positions available now for associates to serve in the Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps program.
Training Opportunities:
OSHA 10 training – construction certification recognized nationally, CPR certification, construction skills and many aspects of program management.
Responsibilities:
- Be an active and participatory AmeriCorps member – attend all training and service days, actively communicate regarding schedules and projects. and participate in weekly check-ins.
- Serve as Project Lead for at least 1 project – serving as the point of contact for volunteers, designing an accessibility ramp, review and purchasing needed supplies, and ensuring homeowner communication and planning are properly executed.
- Choose at least 2 focus areas to serve in while a part of the Boise Valley Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps program.
- Comply with all Habitat for Humanity and AmeriCorps policies and refrain from any prohibited activities.
- Perform service hours through Home Repairs program construction and activities, 85%
- Participate in training opportunities, 15%
- Position may be physically demanding and will require weekend work with a few evening hours as well.
- Represent Boise Valley Habitat and AmeriCorps well during service hours, especially when interacting with the public and partners.
Focus Areas:
Construction Activities
- Assist with construction management on build and project sites
- Implement and follow safety procedures
- Build ADA compliant wheelchair ramps
- Assess project completion and success based on individual’s needs
Homeowner Services
- Serve as a liaison with homeowner to schedule any volunteers, contractors and inspections per project requirements
- Meet with homeowner to record and capture their story
- Ensure process management is coupled with empathy and understanding to address concerns of homeowner
Volunteer Management
- Organize and assist in setting up a robust volunteer program
- Recruit and manage volunteers for multiple programs
- Manage volunteers on the worksite to guide construction activities and to ensure a safe work environment
- Set up strategic practices to retain volunteers and encourage engagement
Compensation
- Members will receive a monthly stipend of $1411.75
- Upon completion of service, members will receive an education award of up to $4,546.50 depending on length of service.
Hours
- Members serve approximately 40 hours a week for a period of 8 months. Members must achieve a minimum of 1200 hours of service within that 8-month period (roughly 31 weeks of service).
- Service hours are typically performed Monday-Saturday, dependent on project schedules and planning with the Program Manager. The general daily schedule will be 8:30am-5pm.
Essential Functions and Qualifications
Must have an ability to serve independently and as part of a team
- Must be willing to try new things and learn new skills
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Must be willing to learn how to use hand tools and power tools to accomplish service activities
- Must have good communication skills
- Must have a high school diploma/GED
- Must be willing to serve a few nights and weekends
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Previous construction experience is helpful but not required. Excellent organization, verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required. Working within a team setting for a common goal is critical as well as being able to work independently.
Required COVID-19 Vaccination
Required to demonstrate full vaccination status for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) with a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized or FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine;
